San José, Costa Rica — The intersection of corporate finance and the creative arts is redefining Costa Rica’s cultural landscape. During the sixteenth edition of the shnit San José film festival, Banco Promerica emerged as a pivotal catalyst for the local audiovisual sector, infusing capital and technical challenges into the nation’s premier short-film showcase. By backing filmmakers with direct cash awards, the financial institution has signaled a deeper commitment to fostering sustainable development within the creative economy.
Private sponsorship in Costa Rica’s cinematic landscape has historically been limited to brand visibility. However, this partnership marks a transition toward venture philanthropy and strategic brand integration. For a sector that often struggles with post-production and development funding, the entry of commercial banks as active patrons offers a stabilizing force, encouraging local creators to elevate their production values to meet international standards.

The competitive core of the festival, the “MADE IN COSTA RICA” category, showcased the breadth of local storytelling. Out of more than 110 submissions, only 18 short films earned a spot in the final selection, highlighting the intense competition within the local industry. The prestigious Jury Prize went to “Jaguar Spirit,” directed by Emi Kondo, which secured $1,000 in cash from Banco Promerica. The jury highly praised Kondo’s extensive research and her raw, localized approach to an environmental crisis. Meanwhile, the Audience Award went to “El Castillo Vacilante,” directed by Melany Mora Murillo, demonstrating the diverse aesthetic preferences of the Costa Rican public.
Beyond traditional storytelling, the festival tested the limits of rapid production through the “shnit REALTIME” competition. Here, 23 production teams faced a grueling 48-hour deadline to conceive, shoot, and edit a complete short film. This year’s top honors were shared in a rare tie between “Stella Maris,” directed by Pablo Wong and the Madreperla team, and “Crisálida,” helmed by Verny Arguello and the Purple Haze team. Additionally, the Audience Award for this category went to “La última partida,” directed by Adrián Vargas of the JustPlay team, proving that high pressure can yield highly engaging cinema.
Innovation extended into functional brand integration through the newly established “Reto Promerica” (Promerica Challenge). Under the same 48-hour pressure cooker, teams were tasked with creating a short piece of up to two minutes that naturally integrated SINPE Móvil, Costa Rica’s dominant mobile payment system, into their narrative. The challenge was won by the JustPlay team, led by Adrián Vargas, who claimed a $500 cash prize. This exercise illustrated how commercial products can be woven seamlessly into artistic narratives without compromising cinematic integrity.
The collaboration represents a paradigm shift in how corporations engage with the arts, moving past superficial advertising toward mutual value creation.
We are excited to see how an alliance between culture, innovation, and business can generate new connections and take good stories further.
Marianne Hütt, Marketing Director of Banco Promerica Costa Rica
Hosted across key cultural venues in San José, including the historic Cine Magaly and Cinema San Pedro from August 20 to 30, the festival screened more than 130 local and international short films. The event served not only as an exhibition platform but also as an industry hub, hosting training workshops and networking events designed to elevate the business acumen of local directors, producers, and technicians.
Ultimately, the synergy between Banco Promerica and the shnit festival underscores a critical truth about Costa Rica’s developing media sector: financial infrastructure is just as important as creative inspiration. As local filmmakers continue to garner international acclaim, structural support from the private banking sector ensures that the national film industry remains economically viable, technologically adaptive, and artistically bold.
