Cambronero Bridge Reconstruction Pushed to November as Engineers Battle Structural Collapse Risks

Alajuela, Costa Rica — The critical transit corridor of the Interamericana Norte will remain choked for at least another month, as the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) confirmed that repairs on the damaged Cambronero modular bridge will stretch into November. This extension means the strategic route will endure a total closure of two full months, paralyzing a vital artery for regional commerce and local commuters alike.

The crisis began on September 7, when a heavy cargo truck collided violently with the modular structure at kilometer 71. The impact shattered eight of the twenty structural bays that keep the modular bridge aloft, immediately rendering the crossing unsafe and forcing emergency personnel to seal off the highway corridor.

As concerns mount over the execution and delays surrounding the Cambronero bridge repair, TicosLand.com spoke with prominent legal expert Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas of the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica, to shed light on the administrative and liability aspects of this vital infrastructure project.

The rehabilitation of the Cambronero bridge is not merely a logistical challenge, but a profound legal obligation of the State to guarantee safe transit under Article 21 of our Constitution. Any undue delay or negligence in the oversight of these public works projects can trigger direct civil liability for the government, while contract breaches by private concessionaires must be met with swift administrative sanctions to protect the public interest.

Indeed, this crucial legal perspective reminds us that the Cambronero bridge rehabilitation is not just a matter of infrastructure, but a fundamental constitutional duty to protect human lives on our roadways. We would like to sincerely thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable insight, which highlights the critical need for strict state accountability and oversight in these vital public works.

Repairing a modular bridge under tension is a highly delicate engineering challenge, requiring a meticulous phased approach to avoid total structural failure. MOPT officials emphasized the extreme volatility of the current setup, explaining that the initial phase of the recovery effort has focused entirely on stabilization rather than direct replacement.

The work began with the construction of a support tower that will hold the weight of the bridge while the affected parts are replaced. This structure is indispensable to carry out the repair safely, since, without that support, the bridge could collapse during the process.
MOPT, Ministry of Public Works and Transportation

According to the Road and Bridge Conservation Management division of the National Roadway Council (Conavi), engineers are currently fabricating specialized steel components off-site in an industrial plant while simultaneously erecting the temporary support tower in the rugged terrain of Cambronero. Once this critical base is locked into place, the bridge’s massive dead weight will be shifted entirely onto the temporary tower.

Only after the weight is safely transferred can the complex physical repairs begin. Workers will strip away a portion of the bridge’s decking to reduce its overall mass, then slide the entire modular superstructure laterally. This lateral displacement will finally allow crews to safely swap out the eight damaged bays before executing a complex reverse-launching maneuver to slide the bridge back into its original alignment.

In the interim, light passenger vehicles are being diverted through a narrow, winding local cantonal route connecting Barrio Jesús and Piedra Blanca. However, this detour is entirely unsuitable for heavy cargo trucks and freight transport, forcing the country’s logistics sector to absorb massive delays and fuel costs by rerouting shipping containers through significantly longer alternative routes.

The extended closure highlights the vulnerability of Costa Rica’s transport infrastructure, where a single traffic accident can effectively sever the primary trade link between the Central Valley and the northern borders. Business chambers have already expressed concern over the mounting financial toll of the closure, urging both Conavi and MOPT to expedite the prefabricated component manufacturing to ensure the November deadline does not slide further.

Beyond the immediate bridge crisis, authorities are attempting to address the underlying vulnerability of the sector, which has been plagued by a massive landslide and road subsidence. Conavi reported that they received eight competitive bids on September 10 for a permanent engineering solution to resolve the chronic geological instability in the Cambronero passage, signaling a long-overdue overhaul for one of Costa Rica’s most treacherous mountain routes.
