Across all three locations, the scope of work was extensive. Improvements targeted recreational areas, walking trails, sanitary services, drainage systems, and rest areas. New water fountains and trash receptacles have also been installed to improve visitor comfort and maintain the cleanliness of the sites. At the Ujarrás viewpoint, the main meeting hall was completely rebuilt with a new roof, updated electrical systems, and modern lighting, transforming it into a more functional space for community or private events.
A central pillar of this renovation project was a firm commitment to universal accessibility. In compliance with Costa Rica’s Law 7600, which guarantees equal opportunities for people with disabilities, significant structural changes were made. Existing structures at the viewpoints were expanded and fitted with ramps, ensuring that individuals with reduced mobility, senior citizens, and families with strollers can now navigate the spaces with ease and safety.
The project also addressed critical maintenance and safety needs. The roofs of security guard booths were renewed, and drainage systems were overhauled in preparation for the region’s rainy season, preventing potential erosion and ensuring the longevity of the infrastructure. Furthermore, trails and play areas were reinforced to enhance overall safety for all visitors, particularly children.
The careful upgrades at the Ujarrás Ruins were executed with a deep respect for its historical value. Maintenance focused on enhancing existing infrastructure such as ranchos, grills, tables, benches, and pathways. The goal was to improve the visitor experience without compromising the integrity of the colonial church’s remains, which are a destination for numerous annual pilgrimages.
