The core achievement of this renovation is a staggering 700% increase in storage capacity. The regional center has expanded from its original, highly restricted capacity of 500 inventory positions to a massive 4,000 positions. This massive expansion ensures that regional healthcare facilities will no longer have to wait for routine shipments from centralized hubs in the Gran Área Metropolitana (GAM).
We went from an extremely limited space, with 500 inventory positions, to having 4,000 positions. It is a significant improvement that fills us with pride and reflects an investment of over ₡9.5 billion to strengthen institutional capacity in the Central Pacific, Chorotega, and Brunca regions.

One of the most technologically significant additions to the Puntarenas center is its newly acquired ability to store products requiring highly specialized conditions. In addition to standard medications, the facility now features reinforced cold chain storage areas designed to preserve temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, the site is now certified to handle psychotropic substances, narcotics, general medical supplies, and industrial alcohols safely.
This localized logistics capability will directly benefit 38 healthcare establishments distributed across the Central Pacific, Chorotega, and parts of the Brunca region. By housing these supplies regionally, the CCSS projects a massive improvement in response times when regional demand spikes. Over 1 million residents living in these peripheral zones stand to benefit from a more agile, reliable, and prompt public healthcare system.
