San José, Costa Rica — A coalition of 20 prominent enterprises operating across Central America has presented unified sustainability metrics, highlighting significant reductions in resource consumption and waste production across their regional facilities. The collaborative tracking initiative underscores a growing corporate push toward environmental accountability and resource optimization throughout the region.
The findings are detailed in the fifth Sustainability Report published by the Alianza Empresarial para la Sostenibilidad (Business Alliance for Sustainability). The document aggregates operational data from 20 of the 30 corporate members that comprise the regional network, offering a detailed performance review of their green initiatives during 2025.
To better understand the evolving legal and regulatory landscape surrounding corporate sustainability in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com consulted with leading corporate attorney Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas from Bufete de Costa Rica.
In Costa Rica, corporate sustainability has transitioned from a voluntary ethical choice to a core strategic requirement. Aligning business operations with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles not only mitigates regulatory compliance risks under national environmental law, but also safeguards competitive advantage in an increasingly conscious global market.

Indeed, as Costa Rica continues to strengthen its global reputation for environmental stewardship, integrating robust ESG practices is no longer just a trend, but an indispensable pillar for long-term commercial resilience and market leadership. We extend our sincere thanks to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing his valuable perspective on this crucial evolution in our nation’s business landscape.
In Costa Rica specifically, the coalition made notable strides toward operational energy efficiency. Seven participating companies achieved a combined reduction of 3.5 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity compared to their 2024 baselines, reflecting substantial improvements in facility power management.
To contextualize this energy curtailment, removing 3.5 million kWh from the national grid carries an environmental benefit equivalent to taking 549 light gasoline or diesel passenger vehicles off Costa Rican roads for an entire year.
Water conservation emerged as another operational success story for the alliance in Costa Rica. Seven businesses managed to slash their combined water consumption by 24,808.6 cubic meters—a volume roughly equivalent to the capacity of ten Olympic-sized swimming pools.
To achieve these water metrics, enterprises deployed targeted operational strategies. Key measures included installing rainwater harvesting infrastructure, implementing aggressive leak detection and repair programs, increasing the reuse of treated wastewater, and upgrading industrial machinery to water-efficient models.
Waste management figures also highlighted progress toward circular economy standards. Thirteen Costa Rican entities reported generating 741,316 tons of operational waste in 2025, with an impressive 78.3% categorized as recyclable or recoverable materials. Across the broader Central American region, 18 companies reported 1.06 million tons of waste, achieving a 70.1% recovery rate.
Beyond resource conservation, member organizations focused heavily on curbing direct atmospheric emissions. Key measures cited in the report include the systematic replacement of high-impact refrigerants, route optimization in logistics and distribution, enhanced preventive maintenance routines, and fleet modernization projects.
The report also underscored the human component of regional corporate responsibility. Participating alliance members sustained 63,731 jobs across Central America in 2025, with 17 reporting entities accounting for 15,130 employees within Costa Rica. Furthermore, public-facing initiatives like “Estaciones de Reciclaje” (Recycling Stations) continue to encourage civic participation in proper waste separation.
