Colper Revives Historic Athletics Tradition with the Carrera de la Comunicación 2026 in San José

San José, Costa Rica — The Colegio de Periodistas y Profesionales en Ciencias de la Comunicación Colectiva de Costa Rica (Colper) has announced the return of its historic athletic tradition under a modernized vision. Scheduled for Sunday, November 15, 2026, the Carrera de la Comunicación 2026 represents a major revival of the beloved “Carrera Clásica La Prensa,” which last took place in 2015. Starting at 6:00 a.m., the competitive event will gather participants at the Parque Beneméritos de la Patria, popularly known as Parque María Auxiliadora, in Sabana Este, San José.

Runners of all experience levels are invited to participate, with the event offering two distinct route distances of 5 and 10 kilometers. This dual-route configuration ensures that novice runners can enjoy a shorter, more accessible challenge while seasoned athletes push their endurance limits in the 10-kilometer category. Designed to foster a sense of community, the race targets active communication professionals, students of journalism and public relations, seasoned athletes, local families, and members of the general public.

This wellness initiative forms a key component of Colper’s broader “Bienestar” program, which seeks to integrate physical fitness with mental, emotional, and social health. The professional association emphasizes that maintaining physical health directly correlates with professional success and resilience in the demanding field of communications. By promoting this balance, the race serves as an escape from labor routine and an excellent networking hub.

The evolution of this race not only shows the diversity of communication specialties represented by our association, but it is also an essential activity for Colper to contribute to the well-being and health of our entire member population and the country as a whole
Yanancy Noguera, President of the Board of Directors of Colper

Registration for the highly anticipated event is structured to encourage widespread participation. Active members of Colper who are up to date with their institutional commitments can register for a discounted rate of ¢18,000, while registration for the general public is priced at ¢20,000, with both fees including the value-added tax (IVA). Enthusiastic participants can secure their spots by registering directly at the Colper headquarters in Sabana Este, at Runners stores, or online through the official portals of Global Sport and A Buen Paso.

The competition is also raising the stakes with attractive cash prizes for its top performers across multiple categories. In the general category, the first-place male and female runners in the 10-kilometer route will each walk away with ¢100,000. Second-place finishers will earn ¢75,000, and third-place participants will receive ¢50,000. Additionally, specialized categories for active Colper members offer ¢100,000 for the top male and female runners in the 10-kilometer distance, and ¢75,000 for the top finishers in the 5-kilometer category.

This 2026 edition has garnered strong support from various prominent Costa Rican business entities and media giants. Prestigious sponsors backing the athletic event include Coopecaja, Coopenae Wink, La República, Cadena Radial Costarricense, La Nación, Grupo Extra, and Gollo. To further elevate the cultural and historical value of the race, the Colper Board of Directors for the 2025-2026 term has selected esteemed journalists Jorge Protti Matteuci and Fernando Fernández González as the official honorees of this year’s event.

The race’s new branding reflects a deep transformation in the media landscape. Previously known as the Carrera Clásica La Prensa, the competition enjoyed a legendary 40-year run that concluded with its milestone 40th anniversary in 2015. By transitioning to the Carrera de la Comunicación, Colper modernizes the event’s identity to encompass a much broader and more diverse spectrum of communication fields.

The expanded scope aims to represent all current professionals under the Colper umbrella. This includes not only traditional newspaper journalists and radio broadcasters but also public relations specialists, corporate communicators, digital media experts, video producers, advertisers, photographers, content creators, and academic students. The organizing committee hopes that the Carrera de la Comunicación 2026 will serve as an annual touchstone where all these creative and information-driven professionals can step away from their intense daily workflows to connect, exercise, and celebrate together.
