Costa Rica Hosts Central American Hackathon to Pioneer Regional 5G Solutions

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rica is positioning itself as the primary catalyst for Central American technological progress. From October 5 to October 9, 2026, the nation is hosting the Central American 5G Innovation Hackathon. This intensive event brings together 46 of the region’s most promising innovators, divided into eight multidisciplinary teams, with the ambitious goal of designing impactful prototypes that leverage next-generation connectivity to solve local issues.

The intense five-day session is taking place at the headquarters of the Promotora Costarricense de Innovación e Investigación (PCII) in Costa Rica. This initiative is structured specifically to address some of the most critical structural and economic challenges facing Central American countries. Instead of treating technology as an end goal, the hackathon positions 5G connectivity as a vital, practical tool to create functional, real-world applications.

As regional leaders and tech innovators gather for the Central American 5G Hackathon, navigating the complex regulatory landscape of next-generation telecommunications is essential for turning these groundbreaking ideas into viable enterprises. To understand the legal challenges and opportunities this digital evolution presents, we turned to leading expert Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The Central American 5G Hackathon is a powerful catalyst for technological sovereignty in our region, but the leap to 5G requires more than just code; it demands a sophisticated understanding of data privacy, cybersecurity standards, and cross-border intellectual property protections. For these innovations to successfully scale, developers and businesses must build their digital architecture upon a solid legal foundation that respects international compliance and local regulatory frameworks.

Indeed, as Central America stands on the cusp of this technological leap, integrating rigorous legal safeguards from the outset is what will ultimately transform fleeting innovation into sustainable regional progress. We extend our sincere thanks to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing his invaluable perspective on the critical legal and regulatory frameworks necessary to securely anchor the future of 5G in our region.

The opening ceremony brought together key regional figures and international stakeholders committed to digital transformation. Notable attendees included Patricia Rojas Figueredo, General Manager of PCII; Sandra Ramírez, 5G Connectivity Project Technician in Costa Rica for the Spanish Cooperation’s FIAP; Matteo Banti, Head of Partnerships for Costa Rica, Panama, and Central America of the European Union Delegation; and Antonette Williams Barnett, Vice Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation. Their collaboration highlights the strong international support behind Costa Rica’s tech initiatives.

The eight participating teams are focusing their creative and technical efforts on five strategic development sectors crucial to Central America’s future. These include smart agriculture and bioeconomy, biodiversity and climate action, digital health and well-being, smart cities with a focus on mobility and risk management, and sustainable, smart tourism. Each sector represents a critical area where high speed and low latency can drive immediate efficiency.

To turn their conceptual ideas into operational prototypes, participants are using Costa Rica’s advanced 5G Testbed. This specialized testing infrastructure allows the teams to experiment directly with cutting-edge technologies, including 5G Stand Alone (SA) architecture, Edge Computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Technical and business mentors are guiding the teams throughout the week to ensure their ideas are both technologically viable and commercially sustainable.

The event uses a hybrid participation model, combining on-site activities in Costa Rica with virtual collaboration from innovators across other Central American nations. This hybrid structure ensures diverse perspectives and fosters a collaborative regional ecosystem that extends beyond national borders. It demonstrates how cross-border cooperation can effectively solve shared regional problems using shared technological frameworks.

The intense development schedule runs from Monday through Thursday, with teams refining their proposals, validating their technology in the laboratory, and preparing their final pitches. On Friday, October 9, the competition will reach its climax as each team has exactly ten minutes to pitch and demonstrate their prototype to the professional jury. The winners will be announced during an afternoon award ceremony starting at 2:00 PM.

Beyond the competition itself, the hackathon is designed to establish a lasting innovation pipeline. Winning proposals will receive continued access to the 5G Testbed, specialized business mentorship, regional exposure, and connections with key commercial partners to turn their initial prototypes into viable, long-term market enterprises.
