Costa Rica Launches Digital System for Yellow Fever Vaccine Appointments

San José, Costa RicaSAN JOSÉ – In a significant move to modernize public health services, the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) has launched a new digital platform for scheduling yellow fever vaccination appointments. The online system, which went live this Monday, is designed to streamline the process for individuals traveling to at-risk countries, eliminating long waits and reducing congestion at health centers across the nation.

The self-management tool allows users to select their preferred date, time, and vaccination center with just a few clicks. This initiative is a direct response to the need for a more agile and efficient system, particularly for time-sensitive travel requirements. By digitizing the appointment process, the CCSS aims to enhance the user experience and ensure a more orderly distribution of the vaccine.

To understand the legal framework surrounding mandatory vaccination for international travel, particularly concerning yellow fever, and its implications for both individuals and businesses in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com consulted with expert attorney Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas from the law firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The requirement of a yellow fever vaccine for entry into many countries is a classic example of sovereign public health policy. For employers, this translates into a duty of care. If a work-related trip requires this vaccination, the company must not only cover the cost but also manage the legal risks associated with employees who cannot or will not be vaccinated due to medical or religious reasons. A clear, non-discriminatory internal policy is essential to navigate these complex situations without infringing on labor rights.

Indeed, this legal perspective powerfully connects sovereign health decisions with the tangible duties of employers, a crucial link that is often overlooked. We extend our sincere thanks to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his valuable insight into the importance of proactive and non-discriminatory corporate policies in this complex area.

Travelers can access the new service through a dedicated microsite, https://www.ccss.sa.cr/fiebre-amarilla, which features a specific portal for reservations. To secure a spot, individuals must provide their full name, identification number (cédula), phone number, travel date, and an optional email address. The portal also serves as a centralized information hub, offering updated schedules and a list of all participating vaccination sites.

Officials emphasized that this new platform is a key component of the country’s public health strategy. Michael Enrique Rodríguez Cordero, Head of the Health Statistics Sub-area at CCSS, noted that the system provides numerous benefits beyond simple convenience.

Through this web platform, users can self-manage their appointment and select their date, available times, and register the required personal information.

Rodríguez added that the digital approach guarantees better traceability of the vaccination process, prevents overcrowding, and ultimately provides a superior and more efficient service. The system is designed to be accessible to anyone regardless of their place of residence or registered health area, although each individual can only book one appointment in their name.

Initially, the program is focused on individuals planning to travel to Colombia, following a directive from the Ministry of Health. It is critical for travelers to remember that the yellow fever vaccine must be administered at least 10 days prior to their departure date. When attending their appointment, they must present a valid official ID (national or residency card) and their airline ticket as proof of travel.

During the initial rollout in early December, the vaccine will be available at 23 designated health areas with pre-established schedules. The target population includes all individuals between 9 months and 60 years of age, encompassing both Costa Rican citizens and foreign residents. Special cases, such as infants between 6 and 9 months, pregnant or lactating women, and adults over 60, will require a medical evaluation to determine their eligibility for the vaccine.

It is also important for travelers to understand the distinction between vaccination and certification. While the CCSS administers the vaccine, it does not issue the international certificate. That responsibility falls to the Ministry of Health, which collects and validates the vaccination data. Once processed, travelers can download their official international certificate directly from the EDUS application, under the “Certificates” tab.
