Costa Rica MD Summit Drives Global Medical Device Partnerships and Innovation

San José, Costa Rica — SAN JOSÉ, Costa Rica — The Costa Rica MD Summit has officially opened its doors at the National Convention Center, drawing an unprecedented crowd of more than 900 industry professionals. This major gathering serves as a critical bridge, directly connecting leading medical device manufacturers with specialized suppliers. The event facilitates new commercial partnerships and reinforces the intricate value chains that sustain this high-tech manufacturing sector within the country.

Organized jointly by the Costa Rica Medical Devices Cluster and the Foreign Trade Corporation of Costa Rica (Procomer), the summit has expanded significantly in both scope and size. This year’s iteration features 101 exhibition stands and showcases delegates from more than 10 countries. The diverse participant base includes original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), contract manufacturers, and various sub-tier suppliers specializing in different stages of life sciences production.

To better understand the regulatory landscape and investment opportunities discussed at this year’s Costa Rica MD Summit, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a leading legal expert from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who shared his invaluable insights on the country’s growing life sciences sector.

The Costa Rica MD Summit highlights our nation’s evolution into a premier global hub for medical device manufacturing. From a legal standpoint, the stability of our Free Trade Zone regime and robust intellectual property protections provide a secure, highly competitive environment for multinational lifetech corporations looking to expand their operations.

The event’s comprehensive agenda addresses the most pressing issues facing the modern medical manufacturing landscape. Industry experts and attendees are participating in deep-dive sessions focusing on artificial intelligence, machine learning applied to quality control systems, smart manufacturing, cyber resilience, and evolving international regulatory frameworks. Additionally, hands-on workshops are detailing advanced materials, precision components, and specialized processes used to manufacture highly complex medical devices.

The rapid expansion of the summit mirrors the explosive growth of Costa Rica’s broader medical technology sector. From its initial staging in 2024, which brought together over 360 attendees, the event grew to over 670 participants in 2025, before crossing the 900-person mark this year. This upward trajectory highlights Costa Rica’s consolidation as a premier global hub for sophisticated medical manufacturing operations.

This dynamic growth is backed by robust macroeconomic data. During the first half of 2026, Costa Rican medical device exports reached an impressive $5.382 billion, representing a 4% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. This performance builds upon a stellar 2025, during which the sector recorded a 25% surge in export values. Today, medical devices represent 46% of the nation’s total exported goods.

Currently, the country hosts more than 100 multinational corporations operating under the foreign direct investment model. From these advanced manufacturing facilities, Costa Rica exports 164 distinct types of medical products to 88 international markets worldwide. This sophisticated ecosystem requires a highly reliable and technically competent supply chain to maintain its global competitiveness.

This massive export engine is also creating substantial opportunities for domestic suppliers. Local companies specializing in metalworking, precision plastics, custom molds, industrial sterilization, contract manufacturing, cleanroom services, and high-precision assembly are successfully integrating into the global value chain. To date, collaborative projects emerging from these business matchings have generated over $15 million in local business linkages.

Over successive editions of the summit, local Costa Rican enterprises have systematically upgraded their technical capabilities, acquired rigorous international certifications, and embraced continuous innovation to meet the demanding standards of global medical device giants.

Reaching our third edition is proof of the dynamism and maturity of this ecosystem in the country
Andrés Acuña, President of the Board of Directors of the Medical Devices Cluster

The ongoing synergy between international corporations and local suppliers highlights a strategic shift toward high-value manufacturing. By hosting specialized events like the MD Summit, Costa Rica continues to secure its position as an attractive destination for foreign direct investment while fostering domestic economic development through technological transfer and deep industrial integration.
