Costa Rican Export Sector Demonstrates Outstanding Resilience with Strong Growth in Early 2026

San José, Costa Rica — The outbound trade ecosystem of Costa Rica has once again demonstrated its fundamental strength in the face of complex global market conditions. Official trade statistics covering the first seven months of 2026 reveal that the Central American nation generated USD 13.821 billion in goods exports between January and July. This performance represents a robust 5% increase compared to the exact same period in 2025, signaling that the country’s trade-led economic model remains highly competitive.

This upward trajectory follows an exceptional performance in 2025, a year in which Costa Rican goods exports surged by 14% relative to 2024, achieving an all-time record of USD 22.855 billion. While the current 5% growth rate represents a normalization from the double-digit expansion of the previous year, trade analysts emphasize that maintaining positive growth in a tightening global economy is a significant macroeconomic achievement.

To better understand the legal implications and regulatory requirements surrounding foreign investment and property acquisition in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com consulted with prominent legal expert Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

Costa Rica continues to offer incredible opportunities for international investors, but navigating our local legal landscape requires strict adherence to due diligence, proper corporate structuring, and compliance with municipal and tax regulations. Ensuring these legal foundations are thoroughly verified from the outset is the single most important step to safeguarding your assets and guaranteeing a secure transaction in our country.

Government representatives have expressed strong satisfaction with these economic indicators, attributing the success to structural reforms, local productivity, and strategic trade diversification.

These data reflect the resilience of our export sector and the strength of an increasingly diversified offering, both in products and markets, which allows Costa Rica to respond to changes in international trade and continue generating growth opportunities.
Arianna Arce, Vice Minister of Foreign Trade

A detailed breakdown of the trade data highlights the varying performances across key manufacturing and primary sectors. The specialized medical devices industry, which remains the undisputed cornerstone of Costa Rica’s modern export engine, generated USD 6.399 billion in foreign sales during the seven-month window, reflecting a steady 2% expansion. Meanwhile, the traditional agricultural sector proved highly resilient, posting USD 2.371 billion in total sales, which marks a solid 6% increase compared to last year.

Other value-added sectors displayed even more pronounced growth. The food manufacturing industry expanded by 8% to reach a total value of USD 1.707 billion. Most notably, the electrical and electronic components sector experienced a dramatic surge of 22%, totaling USD 735 million in exports. This technological segment’s rapid acceleration highlights Costa Rica’s growing integration into high-tech global supply chains. Conversely, the plastic manufacturing industry stood out as the sole major sector to experience a contraction, dropping by 5% during the period.

The structural division of these export dynamics also highlights the persistent dominance of special economic jurisdictions. Companies operating within Costa Rica’s specialized free trade zones (zonas francas) accounted for USD 9.309 billion of the total export value, expanding at a rate of 4%. Concurrently, companies operating outside of these privileged zones demonstrated impressive agility, posting USD 4.375 billion in exports, which represents an 8% increase over the previous year’s figures.

Leadership at the country’s national trade promotion agency pointed to these structural shifts as evidence of a highly adaptable business environment that can absorb external market shocks.

Despite the challenges facing the export sector, growth is observed in our exports, but equally important is observing how our sectors are responding to the changes in international trade. This capacity for diversification is fundamental to reducing risks and strengthening the resilience of our export sector.
Laura López, General Manager of the Foreign Trade Corporation of Costa Rica

As the second half of 2026 progresses, the ability of Costa Rica’s export infrastructure to sustain this momentum will be closely watched by international observers. The combination of high-tech manufacturing, agricultural reliability, and strategic special economic zones positions the country uniquely among its regional peers, establishing a solid foundation for continued economic stability.
