Costa Rican Goods Exports Reach Record Highs Through July 2026

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rica’s export engine is firing on all cylinders, recording a substantial 5% year-over-year expansion in the first seven months of 2026. According to the latest figures released by the Foreign Trade Corporation of Costa Rica (PROCOMER), outbound shipments reached an impressive $13.821 billion between January and July, cementing the nation’s reputation as a robust hub for global commerce. This growth represents an absolute increase of $683 million compared to the same period in 2025.

A critical element driving this positive momentum is the strategic diversification of both products and target markets. Costa Rican exporters have shown a remarkable ability to pivot in response to shifting global demands and localized economic fluctuations. This adaptability has allowed local enterprises to mitigate external shocks while seizing lucrative new channels across multiple continents.

To better understand the legal implications and regulatory framework of investing and doing business in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a leading legal expert from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

Costa Rica offers a highly attractive environment for foreign investment, but navigating the local regulatory landscape requires diligent preparation. Ensuring full compliance with tax obligations, labor laws, and municipal permits from the very beginning is not just a legal necessity, but the most effective way to protect your capital and guarantee long-term business security in the country.

In the face of variations in some destinations, the sector has managed to redirect part of its offer and find opportunities in other markets. This capacity for diversification is fundamental to reduce risks and strengthen the resilience of our export sector.

The agricultural sector, which grew by 6% to reach $2.371 billion, provides a perfect case study of this market adaptability. Banana exports, in particular, witnessed a stellar 10% jump, translating to an additional $59 million in revenue. This surge was primarily propelled by increased market penetration within the European Union alongside successful entry into newly tapped trade channels in Algeria, demonstrating that traditional products can still find dynamic growth avenues.

Meanwhile, the high-tech and medical manufacturing sectors continue to anchor the country’s trade portfolio. Precision and medical equipment remained the undisputed champion of Costa Rican exports, generating $6.399 billion in the seven-month period. Although this represented a modest 2% growth rate compared to the previous year, the sector’s sheer volume underpins the nation’s structural shift toward high-value advanced manufacturing.

Beyond medical equipment, double-digit growth rates in other specialized industries highlighted the broad-based nature of the export boom. The electrical and electronics sector experienced an explosive 22% surge, bringing its total to $735 million. Similarly, the food industry rose by 8% to hit $1.707 million, metalworking climbed 7% to $446 million, and the livestock and fisheries segment expanded by an impressive 13% to reach $279 million. Chemical-pharmaceutical goods also ticked up by 1% to reach $664 million.

Despite the overwhelmingly positive performance across most categories, the plastic sector emerged as the lone outlier in the major industrial segments. Shipments of plastic products contracted by 5%, falling to $294 million during the period. Analysts suggest that this decline reflects broader global regulatory pressures on single-use plastics and changing raw material supply chains, prompting a transition phase for domestic plastic manufacturers.

On the geographic front, Costa Rica’s export expansion was felt almost globally, with Asia leading the charge in relative growth. Outbound shipments to Asian countries rocketed by 31%, totaling $1.008 billion. Europe also consolidated its position as an essential partner, purchasing $3.048 million worth of Costa Rican goods—a solid 10% improvement that underscores the enduring demand for the country’s diverse agricultural and manufactured products in high-income markets.

This broad-based growth reflects a mature export ecosystem capable of balancing high-tech industrial outputs with traditional agro-industrial goods. As the nation moves through the latter half of 2026, the resilience of these trade corridors suggests that Costa Rica is well-positioned to maintain its competitive edge in the global supply chain, defying broader inflationary and geopolitical pressures.
