As reported at the time by the newspaper La Nación, an 18-year-old Carvajal was enjoying a day with friends at the San Rafael river in his native San Carlos when a sudden flash flood, known locally as a “cabeza de agua,” swept him and another companion away. Against all odds, he managed to survive the terrifying ordeal.
This remarkable resilience was tested again just months before his death. In a violent episode in Nosara, Guanacaste, Carvajal became the victim of an armed assault. His vehicle was targeted in a shooting during an altercation, leaving him wounded. He required medical attention but once again survived.
