Puntarenas, Costa Rica — Red Motors, the official distributor of BMW, MINI, and BMW Motorrad in Costa Rica, is making significant strides in promoting sustainable mobility with the installation of 33 new medium-capacity charging stations across the country. This initiative is part of BMW Group’s global campaign, Destination Charging, aimed at expanding the BMW charging network and fostering the growth of electromobility in Latin America and beyond.
These newly installed charging stations are strategically located in key areas, including San José, Puntarenas, Guanacaste, Alajuela, Heredia, and Limón, ensuring widespread accessibility for electric vehicle (EV) users. Notably, 20 of these chargers are Wallbox Gen 3 models, which are available to both BMW and MINI owners as well as the general public, promoting broader use and encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles.
Installing more charging stations is essential for promoting sustainable mobility, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, supporting international climate goals, stimulating innovation and the green economy, and improving energy infrastructure
Nohelia Alfaro, Marketing Manager for BMW and MINI
The charging stations are located in prominent venues such as Fogo Rodizio, Hotel Luisiana, and Multiplaza malls in San José; Hotel Cerro Lodge and Villas Gaia in Puntarenas; Hotel Filadelfia in Guanacaste; and Intel in Heredia, among others. These locations were chosen to maximize convenience and encourage the use of electric vehicles among locals and tourists alike.
In addition to these 20 stations, 13 more are scheduled to become operational in the coming months, further enhancing the national charging network. This expansion not only supports current EV owners but also aims to attract potential buyers by addressing concerns about charging availability and convenience.
Red Motors’ initiative also includes providing a medium-capacity charger with every BMW and MINI electric vehicle sold between 2023 and 2024. To date, 698 such chargers have been delivered to customers, allowing them to install the equipment at their preferred locations, thus personalizing their charging experience and increasing the practicality of owning an EV.
The Costa Rican Association of Electric Mobility (ASOMOVE) and Electromaps report that Costa Rica currently boasts around 249 charging stations, with 150 offering medium capacity and 99 providing rapid charging capabilities. This network, bolstered by Red Motors’ latest contributions, positions the country as a regional leader in electric mobility infrastructure.
This initiative aligns with Costa Rica’s broader environmental goals. The country has long been recognized for its commitment to sustainability, and the enhancement of the EV charging network further solidifies this reputation. By promoting the use of electric vehicles, Costa Rica not only reduces its carbon footprint but also sets a benchmark for neighboring countries.
Furthermore, the presence of these charging stations at popular hotels, restaurants, and shopping centers ensures that EV drivers have easy access to charging facilities during their daily activities, making the transition to electric vehicles smoother and more appealing.
As Costa Rica continues to champion environmental sustainability, the role of businesses like Red Motors in supporting and advancing these goals cannot be overstated. Their proactive approach in expanding the charging infrastructure is a significant step towards a greener future, encouraging more citizens to consider electric vehicles as a viable and attractive option.
