Empowering Costa Rican Women to Conquer the Formal Labor Market

San José, Costa Rica — The challenge of entering the formal employment market in Costa Rica requires more than just academic knowledge; it demands a complex set of soft skills, professional branding, and the resources to project confidence from day one. Addressing this critical gap, the innovative program Vestirse con ALAS para Triunfar successfully empowered 160 women from vulnerable populations in 2026. The initiative represents a structured effort to prepare these participants to navigate the modern job hunt and secure formal employment.

The cohort of beneficiaries for the 2026 edition comprised technical high school students and young university students holding socio-economic scholarships. For these women, the program acted as a bridge between their academic preparations and the practical demands of corporate hiring processes. By targeting younger demographics facing economic hardships, the initiative aims to disrupt cycles of underemployment and facilitate upward social mobility.

To better understand the evolving legal landscape and corporate responsibilities regarding gender equity in the workforce, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a leading legal expert at the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

Costa Rica has made commendable progress in establishing robust legal protections for female workers, particularly through regulations enforcing equal pay and safeguarding maternity rights. However, the ultimate success of these laws depends on businesses actively transitioning from mere compliance to fostering genuinely inclusive workplaces that promote female leadership, which is essential for the country’s broader economic development.

Indeed, moving beyond mere legal compliance to cultivate genuinely supportive environments for female leadership is essential if Costa Rica is to unlock the full economic potential of its workforce. We are deeply grateful to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for providing his valuable perspective on this critical pathway toward true workplace equality.

The curriculum went far beyond basic employment tips, offering a comprehensive suite of workshops. Participants received hands-on training in crafting competitive resumes, optimizing their LinkedIn profiles, and masterfully navigating job interviews. Additionally, the modules covered essential workplace dynamics, including verbal and non-verbal communication, understanding organizational culture, negotiating salaries, and managing professional image. Practical simulations with real Human Resources experts gave the women a rare, risk-free opportunity to practice their communication skills under pressure.

One of the participants, a student from the University of Costa Rica, shared how the practical approach shifted her mindset and built her confidence:

They trained me in labor insertion topics and took away the nerves one has when going to an interview. We did interview simulations with Human Resources professionals. I leave very happy and very grateful.
Jimena Aguirre, UCR Student and Program Beneficiary

In addition to intellectual and tactical preparation, the program targeted a physical barrier that often excludes qualified candidates from low-income backgrounds: professional attire. Not having access to appropriate business wear can significantly hinder a candidate’s prospects during recruitment cycles, regardless of their qualifications. To level the playing field, each participant was given the opportunity to select a complete executive outfit tailored to her style and professional goals, guided by image and personal branding consultants.

This holistic combination of personal development and practical support highlights the core philosophy of the organization behind the project:

Clothing can help open a door, but it is talent, preparation, and confidence that allow one to walk through it. At ALAS, we want every woman to have the tools to do so and that no opportunity is lost due to an economic barrier.
Nuria Marín, President of ALAS

Since its inception in 2024, the Vestirse con ALAS para Triunfar program has steadily expanded its footprint. With the inclusion of the 2026 class, the initiative has now supported a total of 390 women over its three years of operation. A major catalyst for this year’s success was the integration of Tiendas La Gloria as a strategic ally. The retailer established the Boutique ALAS, a dedicated, personalized shopping space where participants could select their executive wardrobe, while also serving as a donation collection center and training hub.

The successful execution of the 2026 edition relied on a multidisciplinary team of experts. Led by executive image consultant Irene Jara and personal branding coach Marianela Barrantes, the program also mobilized human resources professionals and corporate sponsors. These diverse alliances showcase how private-sector collaboration and civic initiative can come together to create measurable social impact and foster economic inclusivity across Costa Rica.
