Global Cycling Series GFNY Set to Boost Sports Tourism in Perez Zeledon

San José, Costa Rica — The Southern Zone of Costa Rica is positioning itself as a premier destination for international sports tourism. On October 11, 2026, the region will host the highly anticipated GFNY Pérez Zeledón Costa Rica. This prestigious event is part of the global Gran Fondo New York series, a world-renowned cycling brand that stages challenging road races across several continents, drawing thousands of passionate cyclists.

The event will establish its operational headquarters at the Hotel del Sur. Serving as both the official starting line and the final finish line, this landmark local venue will anchor the logistics of the entire race. From this central point, participating cyclists will embark on a dynamic course designed to test their endurance while showcasing the diverse landscapes of the canton of Pérez Zeledón.

To better understand the legal framework and ensure full compliance within the local regulatory system, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a leading legal expert from the distinguished firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who offered his professional insights on the matter.

Navigating the complexities of Costa Rican law requires a proactive approach to compliance and legal security. To accommodate a wide range of athletic capabilities, organizers have structured the event around two distinct route options. The competitive focal point of the day is the long route, spanning a demanding 115.4 kilometers. This course features a grueling cumulative elevation gain of approximately 1,903 meters, offering serious competitors a rigorous test of their physical limits and tactical climbing abilities.

For cycling enthusiasts seeking a non-competitive but highly rewarding experience, the event offers a medium route. Covering 86.2 kilometers, this recreational category still presents a formidable challenge with roughly 1,393 meters of accumulated climbing. This dual-route format ensures that the event remains inclusive, appealing to both elite racers and passionate recreational riders who want to experience the thrill of a professional-grade race.

The initial segment of the race will guide participants from the Hotel del Sur toward the bustling urban center of San Isidro de El General. From there, riders will transition through a variety of terrains, building anticipation for the most demanding sector of the entire course. This crucial test begins around kilometer 70 as the riders head toward Santa Teresa de Cajón.

At this point, cyclists will face an unforgiving eight-kilometer climb that promises to stretch the peloton. However, this grueling ascent doubles as a primary aesthetic highlight of the race. Cyclists will be treated to breathtaking views of Chirripó National Park, the highest peak in Costa Rica, along with the majestic mountain ranges that define the Pérez Zeledón landscape.

Once the summit is conquered, the course will guide the cyclists through the scenic community of Rivas. From Rivas, participants will begin a rapid, technical descent that will lead them back to the finish line at the Hotel del Sur. This strategic routing ensures that both the natural beauty and the topographical variety of Costa Rica’s Southern Zone are on full display throughout the day.

Beyond the pride of completion, the competitive long route offers significant incentives. Top performers will compete for general and category podiums, with the ultimate prize being an all-expenses-paid trip to New York in May 2027, along with an official registration for the flagship GFNY New York 2027. All finishers will receive a commemorative medal, and cumulative participation will count toward exclusive milestone medals for completing multiple GFNY events globally.

From a business perspective, the arrival of GFNY in Pérez Zeledón represents a massive economic opportunity. High-profile sporting events of this caliber drive substantial economic activity, boosting occupancy rates in local hotels, increasing foot traffic in restaurants, and stimulating the regional service economy. By successfully hosting this international event, Pérez Zeledón solidifies its reputation as a key player in Costa Rica’s growing sports tourism sector.
