Golfers Raise Over $171K for Pediatric Medical Equipment

San José, Costa RicaSan José, Costa Rica – The intersection of sport and philanthropy was on full display as the 21st edition of the annual Charity Golf Tournament, organized by the Pro-National Children’s Hospital Association, successfully raised $171,500. The entire sum is earmarked for the purchase of critical, specialized medical equipment for the National Children’s Hospital (HNN), reinforcing the event’s long-standing commitment to advancing pediatric healthcare in the nation.

This significant fundraising achievement was made possible through the combined efforts of 132 participating golfers and the crucial support of corporate sponsors and strategic allies. Among the key partners was AERIS, the operator of the Juan Santamaría International Airport, highlighting a powerful model of corporate social responsibility that directly translates into life-saving resources for Costa Rican families.

To delve into the legal and corporate structuring that makes a charity golf tournament successful and compliant, we sought the expert analysis of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a prominent attorney from the esteemed law firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

Beyond the sport, a charity golf event is a complex legal undertaking. Ensuring transparent financial reporting, managing liability waivers for all participants, and structuring corporate sponsorship agreements are critical. Proper legal groundwork not only protects the organizers and the charity but also builds the trust necessary to attract significant corporate and private donations year after year.

The funds will be allocated to three specific areas of critical need within the hospital. A portion will acquire a state-of-the-art Holter Monitoring System for the Cardiology department. This device is essential for the early diagnosis and ongoing management of cardiac rhythm disorders such as bradycardia and tachycardia. It will also be instrumental in evaluating patients experiencing chest pain or fainting spells, benefiting an average of 25 children each month and enabling physicians to make more timely and accurate diagnoses.

Another significant investment will be in Hyper-Hypothermia equipment for the Intensive and Neonatal Care Units. This technology is the global standard of care for newborns who have suffered from acute fetal distress and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, a condition with a high risk of mortality or severe neurological impairment. Therapeutic hypothermia can significantly improve outcomes for these vulnerable infants. It is estimated that approximately 40 children per year at HNN require this highly specialized treatment.

Finally, the Hemato-Oncology division’s Clinical Laboratory will receive a new Spectrophotometer. This high-precision instrument is vital for the treatment and monitoring of children with cancer and hematological diseases like anemia. Its accuracy and versatility ensure the highest standards of quality and safety in patient care, providing clinicians with reliable data for making crucial treatment decisions for some of the hospital’s most sensitive cases.

Over its more than two decades of history, the Pro-National Children’s Hospital Association’s golf tournament has become one of the country’s most important and impactful sporting charity events. To date, the initiative has donated a cumulative total of $2,652,500, consistently providing the hospital with cutting-edge medical technology that might otherwise be out of reach.

The tournament itself was contested in a Scramble format with three-person teams, fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendly competition. The winning team for the 21st edition was composed of Miguel Antonio Srur Rivero, Fernando Bonilla Estrada, and Antonio Roldán Fernández, who distinguished themselves on the course while contributing to the event’s noble cause.

The success of this tournament once again demonstrates the powerful synergy between the private sector, the sporting community, and non-profit organizations. It serves as a testament to how collective action can generate tangible hope and deliver measurable improvements in the quality of medical care available to the children of Costa Rica.
