Guanacaste Unveils Landmark Crystal Lagoon Project

Guanacaste Unveils Landmark Crystal Lagoon Project

Guanacaste, Costa RicaLIBERIA, GUANACASTE – A new era of urban development has officially arrived in Costa Rica’s northern province. The ambitious Ciudad NYA project has announced the completion of the nation’s first Crystal Lagoons amenity, a massive 3.5-hectare crystalline lagoon that serves as the centerpiece for a next-generation mixed-use community in Liberia.

This landmark achievement introduces a new standard for recreational infrastructure in the region, transforming the landscape with its turquoise waters and pristine shores. The lagoon is an impressive feat of engineering, featuring seven distinct white-sand beaches, a central island, and a 1.6-kilometer perimeter trail for residents and visitors to enjoy. Its completion marks a pivotal moment for both the developers and the future of Guanacaste’s real estate market.

To gain a deeper perspective on the legal and investment landscape surrounding the development of Crystal Lagoons projects in the country, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the renowned firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The Crystal Lagoons model is a powerful value-add for real estate developers, transforming inland properties into premium beachfront-style destinations. However, prospective partners and investors must conduct rigorous due diligence, particularly concerning water concession rights, environmental viability permits, and the long-term maintenance obligations embedded within the licensing agreements. These elements are critical for ensuring the project’s legal soundness and sustained profitability in the Costa Rican market.

This legal perspective is crucial, reminding us that while the allure of a turquoise lagoon is powerful, its long-term viability truly depends on the meticulous due diligence he outlines. We extend our sincere thanks to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for sharing his invaluable expertise on navigating these complex regulatory waters.

The lagoon is the anchor of a comprehensive urban plan designed to seamlessly integrate residential living with commercial, service, and recreational spaces. This model aims to create a self-sustaining community where modern conveniences and natural beauty coexist, offering a holistic lifestyle that has been previously unavailable in the area. The project is poised to become a major hub of activity and a benchmark for future developments across the country.

Project leaders are emphasizing the transformative nature of this milestone. The integration of such a large-scale water feature is expected to significantly elevate the appeal of Ciudad NYA and stimulate economic growth throughout Guanacaste by attracting investment and tourism.

Completing the construction of the lagoon represents a before and after for Ciudad NYA and for Guanacaste
Manuel Freer, CEO and Co-founder of NYA

At the core of this innovation is Crystal Lagoons’ world-renowned sustainable technology. The system is celebrated for its remarkable efficiency, a crucial factor in the water-conscious province of Guanacaste. According to data verified by the global certification firm Bureau Veritas, the technology uses up to 30 times less water than a golf course of a similar size. Furthermore, it requires up to 100 times fewer chemical additives than a conventional swimming pool and consumes a mere 2% of the energy used by traditional filtration systems.

The operation is a model of environmental responsibility. The lagoon functions on a closed-circuit system, meaning water is only added to compensate for natural evaporation, a process supplemented by rainwater collection. The water itself is sourced from fully concessioned wells, with all necessary approvals secured from the Water Directorate of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE). Full compliance with Ministry of Health regulations, backed by current sanitary permits and a commercial patent, ensures the facility operates at the highest standards of safety and legality.

The successful launch has been hailed by the technology’s parent company as a significant expansion of its global footprint and a testament to the strong partnership behind the project. The collaboration brought together a diverse team of experts to bring the complex vision to life.

As a company, we are very happy to announce the first operational lagoon in Costa Rica, which represents a historic milestone
Francisco Matte, Regional Director of Crystal Lagoons

The construction was a collaborative effort involving engineers from Crystal Lagoons, the dedicated team at Ciudad NYA, the respected construction firm EDICA, and the innovative designers at Lacayo Arquitectos. With the lagoon now operational, the project will shift its focus throughout the remainder of 2026 to the delivery of residential units and the phased opening of its surrounding commercial and recreational venues, bringing the full vision of Ciudad NYA to life.
