Guanacaste’s Nicoya Rum Makes Triumphant Homecoming

Guanacaste’s Nicoya Rum Makes Triumphant Homecoming

Guanacaste, Costa Rica — A premium rum born from Guanacaste’s rich sugarcane fields has completed a remarkable journey, achieving international acclaim in Europe before officially launching in its country of origin. Nicoya Rum, a spirit that embodies a unique fusion of Costa Rican terroir and French distilling expertise, is now available to local consumers, marking a significant milestone for the nation’s burgeoning high-end spirits industry.

The spirit, previously known as Ron Pura Vida in the European market, is the creation of the renowned French company Les Bienheureux. After an exhaustive search that spanned more than twenty tropical destinations, the firm selected Costa Rica for its ambitious project. The decision was rooted in the exceptional quality of the country’s natural resources and its potential for crafting a truly distinctive product.

To better understand the legal and commercial framework underpinning a venture like Nicoya Rum, we sought the perspective of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an expert attorney from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica. He provided key insights into the challenges and opportunities involved in launching a new national brand with international aspirations.

The strategic use of the name ‘Nicoya’ immediately invokes a powerful connection to a globally recognized Blue Zone, which is brilliant for marketing but critical from a legal standpoint. The company’s primary challenge and opportunity will be to secure not just a trademark, but potentially a Denomination of Origin or Geographical Indication. This would legally protect the link between their rum and the specific qualities of the region, creating a defensible asset that prevents competitors from capitalizing on the name and guarantees authenticity for the consumer.

Indeed, the path from a powerful brand name to a legally protected regional treasure is the crucial journey that lies ahead. Securing a Denomination of Origin, as highlighted, would not only shield the brand’s integrity but also solidify its promise of authenticity to a global audience. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his invaluable perspective on this critical legal distinction.

Costa Rica won because of the quality of its sugarcane, its climate, and its potential to create a rum with its own identity.

The heart of Nicoya Rum lies in a single family-owned estate in Guanacaste, which boasts over 12,000 hectares of cultivated sugarcane. This “single-estate” model ensures complete traceability and a 100% Costa Rican origin for its core ingredients. The rum itself is a sophisticated blend derived from sugarcane juice, molasses, and honey, a combination that provides a unique balance of complexity, elegance, and a smooth flavor profile.

While the entire production process—from cultivation and distillation to aging—takes place in Guanacaste, the final bottling is currently handled in France for administrative purposes. This logistical choice, however, does not detract from the rum’s authentic local character, which Les Bienheureux has championed as a key selling point. The project was conceived to honor its roots while applying world-class techniques.

Before its homecoming, the rum had already built a formidable reputation abroad. In 2025 alone, it sold over 100,000 bottles across more than ten countries, securing shelf space in prestigious European retailers like the iconic Galeries Lafayette in France. This success story abroad has set the stage for a highly anticipated domestic debut, managed by local distributor Grupo Pampa.

The brand’s new name, Nicoya, is a deliberate tribute to the Costa Rican peninsula celebrated as a global “Blue Zone” for its residents’ longevity and balanced lifestyle. The name seeks to evoke a sense of connection to the land and natural harmony. To further enhance its profile, Master Blender Olivier Dumont has employed a dual-barrel aging process, using a combination of bourbon and cognac casks to impart elegant and distinctive notes of vanilla and wood.

Two expressions are being introduced to the Costa Rican market initially: Nicoya Añejo, aged in bourbon barrels and positioned as ideal for premium cocktails, and the more complex Nicoya XA (Extra Añejo), recommended for savoring neat. The products will be available in bars, restaurants, IMAS duty-free shops, e-commerce platforms, and major supermarkets.

With its successful launch in Costa Rica, and with plans to enter the United States market in March 2026, Nicoya Rum is not just a new product but a statement of intent. It positions Costa Rica as a serious contender on the world stage of premium spirits, proving that local resources, when combined with international expertise, can create a world-class brand.
