The path to the grand finale was highly competitive, underscoring the massive scale of the national competition. Organizers received 243 unpublished, original submissions from all corners of Costa Rica. From this extensive pool, only 10 finalist compositions were chosen to perform at the prestigious Teatro Nacional, showcasing the high caliber of local songwriting talent across diverse genres.
In addition to the main prize, the festival recognized cultural preservation through its Legacy Award (Premio Legado). This honor was given to the song Rema pariente, composed by Leonel Ortega of Playas del Coco, Carrillo. Ortega’s work acts as a human portrait of coastal life, capturing the daily struggles and spirit of the local maritime communities, which serve as endless raw material for authentic national music.
Juárez, who traveled back to Costa Rica from her doctoral studies abroad to participate in the event, emphasized the importance of spaces like the National Song Festival for fostering community and professional growth among Costa Rican musicians.
Participating in the National Song Festival brought immense joy from the very beginning. From the United States, where I am currently pursuing a doctorate in music, I did not hesitate to come and be part of this movement in favor of national music. Furthermore, seeing the quality of each proposal, the great trajectory of the jury, and the passion of the organization made it much more significant. For me, it was a true honor to have been part of this edition. The experience with my colleagues, the nerves, the expectation make one renew their love for music and the desire to share it with the public. Meeting again with dear friends and colleagues from the festival band was the cherry on top. Being accompanied by musicians of that caliber is not something I take for granted and I appreciate it enormously. Also, seeing the hard work of the colleagues from the National Theater continues to motivate me to give my all to preserve our country’s culture. Thank you to the festival for opening this door, and thank you for letting me share Hija del Tempisque on this beautiful stage.
