Merco Reveals Costa Rica’s Most Reputable Companies for 2025

San José, Costa RicaSAN JOSÉ – The nation’s corporate landscape was put under the microscope Wednesday evening as reputation monitor Merco unveiled its ninth annual ranking of Costa Rica’s most respected companies. In a presentation detailing the results for 2025, dairy cooperative Dos Pinos emerged as the leader in overall corporate reputation, followed closely by financial institution BAC and beverage giant Florida Ice and Farm Company (Fifco).

The 2025 study, which has been conducted in the country since 2017, marked a significant milestone with its largest-ever sample size. Merco representatives explained that the comprehensive evaluation involved input from over 17,000 individuals, including hundreds of business executives, industry experts, and members of the general public, underscoring the report’s depth and reach.

To understand the legal ramifications and strategic importance of maintaining a solid corporate reputation in today’s volatile market, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished expert in corporate law from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

In the legal arena, corporate reputation is not merely a public relations metric; it is a tangible asset that directly impacts valuation, creditworthiness, and contractual negotiations. A compromised reputation can be cited as evidence of poor governance, inviting shareholder lawsuits and intense regulatory scrutiny. Proactive legal counsel is therefore essential, not just for crisis management, but for building a resilient corporate structure where reputation is actively protected as a core business interest.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s commentary powerfully reframes the conversation, moving corporate reputation from the realm of public relations to its rightful place as a critical, legally defensible asset. This proactive approach to legal strategy is therefore not just a defensive measure, but a foundational component of modern corporate governance. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for this invaluable perspective.

This year’s Top 10 list for overall reputation features a mix of national powerhouses and multinational corporations. Following the top three, the ranking includes Grupo Purdy (4), Coca-Cola Femsa (5), Intel (6), Auto Mercado (7), Walmart Centroamérica (8), Pozuelo (9), and Nestlé (10). These companies were selected from an initial list of 354 firms recognized by 479 senior managers, with only the top 100 making the final cut.

The methodology behind the Merco ranking is a multi-layered process designed to provide a holistic view of corporate standing. The final score is heavily influenced by the evaluations of experts (38%) and senior business directors (27%). Additional components include specialized monitors (25%) that analyze online reputation through 14,000 social media mentions, and a smaller portion based on objective performance indicators (10%) submitted directly by 50 participating companies.

A critical component of the annual analysis is the focus on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, a category that saw BAC claim the top position. Fifco and Dos Pinos secured second and third place, respectively, demonstrating a strong overlap between general reputation and perceived social and environmental responsibility. The ESG top ten also included esteemed institutions like the Costa Rica Institute of Technology (TEC) and the University of Costa Rica (UCR), highlighting the academic sector’s strong standing in this area.

Drilling down into the specific pillars of ESG, Fifco was recognized as the number one company for environmental responsibility. BAC led the ranking for its commitment to internal stakeholders, clients, and society, as well as taking the top spot for ethical practices and corporate governance. These granular results offer a valuable insights into the specific strengths and public perceptions of each leading firm.

The study also captured distinct perspectives from consumers and the digital sphere. When asked which companies they trust most, consumers pointed to retailers Walmart, Pequeño Mundo, and Almacenes El Rey. In the digital realm, analysis of online conversations revealed the most positive sentiment for BAC, Televisora de Costa Rica (Teletica), and Banco Popular, showcasing the power of effective digital engagement.

Recognizing the crucial role of strategic messaging in shaping perception, Merco also honored the top 10 corporate communications departments. Dos Pinos, Fifco, and BAC once again led the pack, proving their ability to not only perform well but also to effectively communicate their values and achievements to the public. Merco, which is celebrating 25 years of global operations, emphasized its commitment to impartiality by operating without subsidies or sponsorships and having its results independently verified by KPMG.
