The gala ceremony, a highlight of the annual EXPOPYME 2026 trade fair, celebrated the exceptional performance and strategic vision of companies that are shaping the future of Costa Rica’s economy.
This year’s competition was exceptionally fierce, drawing a massive pool of 155 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and 37 emerging entrepreneurs from a diverse range of sectors, including manufacturing, technology, food services, and tourism. In the Business Management and Growth category, Johanna Cristina Echeverría Palacios’s venture, CUSCALEÑO, earned top honors, with TRUE FOOD CR S.A. being named the winning SME for its outstanding operational excellence.
The awards also recognized companies making a significant impact through unique market positioning and corporate responsibility. CANDELANDIA, a venture by Cindy Fonseca Arias, won the award for Value Proposition and Differentiation. In the same category, GLOBAL KEMICAL S.A. was the triumphant SME. The Business Sustainability award highlighted a commitment to environmental and social governance, with Silvia Elena Guevara Cabalceta’s SANDRA’S CRAFT winning among entrepreneurs and CAMARAL S&R S.A. taking the prize for SMEs.
Two standout participants received double accolades, demonstrating exceptional merit across multiple business disciplines. CAMARAL S&R S.A. not only won for Sustainability but also secured the Regional Development award, highlighting its significant contribution to its local economy. Meanwhile, SANDRA’S CRAFT followed its Sustainability win with the highest possible honor: the Maximum Recognition for Business Merit, a testament to its overall excellence. Other major winners included PAYASOS KALLEY, by Zeneida Briceño Aguirre, for Regional Development among entrepreneurs, and A & R FOOD SOLUTIONS S.A., which received the Maximum Recognition for Business Merit in the SME category.
The path to victory was paved with rigorous scrutiny. All applicants were first required to be formally registered with MEIC. From there, a panel of 48 specialists from the National Incubation and Acceleration Network and the broader entrepreneurial ecosystem conducted an exhaustive validation and analysis of each submission. This meticulous process ensured that only the most qualified and impactful businesses would advance.
During the final stage, a select group of nine SMEs and seven entrepreneurs, representing all seven provinces of the country, were invited to present their business models directly to a jury of five evaluators from the SME Support Network. The judges focused their assessment on a set of critical variables: strategic business management, market competitiveness, level of innovation, clarity of value proposition, commitment to sustainability, and effective integration into productive value chains.
The breadth of winners—from tech platforms and food solutions to artisanal crafts and chemical companies—paints a powerful picture of a diversified and resilient national economy. The successful conclusion of the 2026 awards not only honors individual achievements but also serves as an inspiration for the next generation of Costa Rican entrepreneurs, reinforcing the government’s commitment to fostering a world-class environment for business growth and innovation.
