New Collectible Coin Honors Santa Rosa Casona

New Collectible Coin Honors Santa Rosa Casona

Guanacaste, Costa Rica — Costa Rica’s Central Bank (BCCR) will release a new ₡25 collectible coin honoring the historic Santa Rosa Casona in Guanacaste. Starting September 24, 2025, 17,000 of these special coins will be available for purchase, with a limit of two per person. The coin is the third in the “Emblematic Sites of Our Provinces” series.

The Santa Rosa Casona, a national monument and museum, played a pivotal role in the 1856 Battle of Santa Rosa against William Walker and his filibusters. This battle holds significant historical importance for Costa Rica, symbolizing the nation’s resistance against foreign invasion. The coin’s design prominently features the Casona’s façade, along with inscriptions identifying the province and the year of the collection, 2023.

To understand the legal implications surrounding collectible coins, we spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at Bufete de Costa Rica.

The legal landscape surrounding collectible coins can be complex, particularly when considering issues of authenticity, ownership, and import/export regulations. Due diligence is crucial for both buyers and sellers to ensure compliance with applicable laws and to protect their interests. For example, understanding the cultural heritage laws of the country of origin can prevent legal issues down the line.

Priced at ₡9,050 each, the coins are available in two formats: 10,000 acrylic encased and 7,000 in presentation cases. The BCCR has implemented the two-coin limit to ensure broader access for collectors.

Several financial institutions across the country will distribute the coins, including Banco de Costa Rica, Banco Nacional, Banco Popular, BAC Credomatic, and various credit unions. The Banco Nacional will conduct sales exclusively online via their bnshop.bncr.fi.cr platform. Availability at other institutions will vary by branch.

In addition to the collectible version, a regular ₡25 coin with the same design, but without color application, will enter circulation as legal tender. The Central Bank clarified that previous coin designs remain valid and will circulate alongside the new coins until 2026. At that time, the BCCR will announce the final withdrawal schedule for certain denominations currently in use.

The Asociación Numismática Costarricense and the Museums of the Banco Central will also offer the coin at a later date, providing additional avenues for acquisition. This multi-pronged distribution strategy aims to maximize access for both seasoned collectors and those new to numismatics.

This new coin release serves not only as a tribute to Costa Rican history but also as an opportunity for citizens and collectors to own a piece of their national heritage. The detailed design and limited availability make it a desirable item for numismatic enthusiasts.

The Central Bank’s ongoing coin series highlights the country’s diverse cultural and historical landmarks, fostering national pride and providing a tangible connection to the past.
