New Program Equips Coffee Sector for International Success

San José, Costa RicaSAN JOSÉ – In a strategic move to bolster one of the nation’s most iconic industries, 81 members of the Costa Rican coffee sector have successfully completed an intensive training program designed to sharpen their competitive edge in the global marketplace. The initiative, titled “Café de Costa Rica para el Mundo” (Costa Rican Coffee for the World), provided crucial commercial, financial, and export-focused education to a diverse group of producers, micro-mill operators, and other key businesses within the coffee value chain.

The program was a collaborative effort spearheaded by the Foreign Trade Promotion Agency of Costa Rica (PROCOMER) and the Coffee Institute of Costa Rica (ICAFE). Its primary objective was to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the necessary skills to expand their footprint abroad, moving beyond production to master the complexities of international trade and business management. The participants represented a dynamic cross-section of the industry, all eager to capitalize on the premium reputation of Costa Rican beans.

To understand the intricate legal framework that underpins Costa Rica’s world-renowned coffee industry, from its geographical indications to international trade agreements, we sought the expertise of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The ‘Denominación de Origen Café de Tarrazú’ is more than just a label; it’s a legally protected intellectual property asset. It guarantees authenticity and quality for consumers worldwide, but for producers, it represents a crucial legal tool to combat counterfeiting and command a premium price. Properly enforcing these geographical indications is paramount to safeguarding the economic future and heritage of our coffee-growing regions.

This legal perspective provides a crucial understanding: the integrity of our national treasure is protected not just by the farmers who cultivate it, but by the legal frameworks that defend its authenticity and value in a global market. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his invaluable insight into how law safeguards both our heritage and our producers’ future.

The curriculum was delivered through a modern, blended-learning format consisting of five specialized sessions. Four of these workshops were conducted virtually, allowing for broad participation from different regions. The training modules covered a wide array of essential topics, including advanced international negotiation tactics, step-by-step export preparation, professional product photography for e-commerce platforms, and the critical details of logistics, documentation, and regulatory compliance for global shipments.

Laura López, the General Manager of PROCOMER, emphasized the strategic importance of such initiatives for the continued growth of the sector. She highlighted that equipping producers with these tools is fundamental to unlocking new revenue streams and securing a stronger position in high-value niche markets.

Costa Rican coffee has high international recognition and enormous potential to continue differentiating itself in higher-value markets. These spaces allow producers and companies to strengthen their commercial and business capabilities to take advantage of new international opportunities.

A key component of the program was a dedicated in-person session, “Café y Finanzas para el Mundo” (Coffee and Finance for the World). This session zeroed in on the financial health of coffee enterprises, providing attendees with fundamental financial management tools specifically tailored for SMEs. Participants received practical guidance on navigating the financial landscape, including how to access different financing options to fuel growth, upgrade equipment, and fund their export ventures.

Gustavo Jiménez, the Executive Director of ICAFE, praised the program’s role in cultivating a more resilient and forward-thinking generation of coffee entrepreneurs. He noted that the global market demands not just high-quality products but also producers with sophisticated business acumen.

Today we need to have producers who are increasingly skilled and capable of facing the opportunities the world offers.
Gustavo Jiménez, Executive Director of ICAFE

Jiménez also drew attention to a particularly encouraging trend observed during the program: the active involvement of a younger generation of producers. He pointed out that these emerging leaders are bringing fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to the traditional family business, signaling a vibrant future for the industry.

The conclusion of the training series is not the end of the journey for these 81 participants. As part of a commitment to sustained development, the graduates will now gain access to a suite of follow-up resources. This ongoing support includes opportunities to join more specialized programs, receive one-on-one technical assistance, and participate in high-profile commercial promotion events such as international trade fairs, business missions, and exclusive networking roundtables, ensuring their newfound skills translate into tangible business growth.
