In light of this scenario, the Municipality of San José decided to open new participation opportunities and turn to private companies that for years have shown interest in being part of this great celebration, with the purpose of building a proposal that allows keeping the spirit of the Festival de la Luz alive and, at the same time, offering citizens a renewed experience.

On the opposing side of the issue, several of the public institutions defended their absence, clarifying that the choice was not political. Instead, executives from these state agencies emphasized a need to optimize public spending and redirect resources to initiatives that generate a broader national impact, rather than concentrating marketing budgets solely in the capital city.
Among the most notable absences is the Banco de Costa Rica (BCR), a traditional heavyweight of the parade whose creative floats have historically drawn massive applause. The financial institution noted that the change of plans was actually initiated by proposals stemming from the municipal government itself.
For this 2026, the Municipality of San José informed us that, considering different strategic factors, it plans to modify the traditional parade, which is why the BCR will not be part of this year’s edition.

For 2026, the BN decided not to participate in the Festival de la Luz as part of a national strategy that seeks to bring its presence and initiatives to a greater number of people in different regions of the country through events, community activities, entrepreneurship and SME fairs, among other initiatives.

The state-owned insurer, Instituto Nacional de Seguros (INS), also clarified its position, stating that its decision aligns with internal budget priorities. Following its large-scale centennial float in 2024 and its participation in alternative city events in 2025, the insurer will pivot to a static light display in one of San José’s key public parks rather than entering a mobile float.
For this 2026, it was confirmed to the Municipality that the Institution was considering illuminating Parque España, in front of the INS, as part of the activities for the Month of Light. These decisions are made based on strategic prioritization and the availability of budget resources. They respond exclusively to institutional needs and priorities and are not due to political issues.
