San José, Costa Rica — Starbucks Costa Rica has launched a targeted corporate social responsibility initiative designed to funnel financial resources directly into the country’s historic coffee-producing regions. Dubbed “Latte Ayudar,” the campaign is timed to coincide with Coffee Month, creating a direct bridge between daily consumer habits and grassroots community development. From October 8 to October 11, 2026, the specialty coffee retailer will donate one dollar for every latte sold across its nationwide network of stores to fund social development.
The designated beneficiary of this philanthropic drive is “Semillas de Cambio” (Seeds of Change), an impactful social program managed by the international non-governmental organization Glasswing International. A cornerstone activation event is scheduled for October 8, which aims to spotlight Glasswing’s extensive humanitarian and educational work in Costa Rica’s rural sectors, mobilizing consumers to participate actively in a tangible developmental milestone.
To better understand the complex regulatory and business landscape surrounding multinational expansions like Starbucks in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com reached out to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished legal expert from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica, for his professional insight.
The successful expansion of a global giant like Starbucks in Costa Rica highlights the robustness of our country’s legal framework regarding foreign direct investment, trademark protection, and local labor compliance. Navigating the Costa Rican regulatory environment requires a strategic balance between aligning with international brand standards and strictly adhering to local municipal permits, sanitary registrations, and labor laws to ensure sustainable operational growth.

Indeed, as Starbucks’ journey demonstrates, aligning global operational standards with Costa Rica’s rigorous regulatory framework is not just a legal necessity, but a strategic cornerstone for sustainable success in our market. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for sharing his valuable perspective and helping our readers better understand the legal complexities behind foreign investment in the country.
Originating in 2024 with foundational funding from The Starbucks Foundation, Semillas de Cambio was structured as a two-year pilot program situated in the Los Santos region. The initiative specifically targets vulnerable rural, indigenous, and migrant girls in the agricultural cantons of Tarrazú, Dota, and León Cortés Castro. By zeroing in on these coffee-harvesting communities, the program addresses systemic gender inequalities and limited educational access at the source of the global coffee supply chain.
With Latte Ayudar we want to invite our customers to learn about the work of Semillas de Cambio. The initiative seeks to ensure that more girls have support spaces, close role models, and tools to build their future.
Mónica Bianchini, Country Manager of Starbucks Costa Rica
The quantitative outcomes of the program’s initial biennial phase underscore its structural efficacy. According to data validated by Glasswing International, the initiative directly engaged 1,276 community members. Among the direct beneficiaries were 430 young girls aged between 9 and 18, alongside 60 locally trained community mentors who facilitate weekly development sessions. Furthermore, the framework established 23 active girls’ clubs and trained 407 parents and caregivers to ensure domestic alignment with the program’s core lessons.
Beyond mere participation numbers, the qualitative impact of Semillas de Cambio shows significant social progress. Approximately 92% of participating girls demonstrated an enhanced capacity to recognize and properly respond to gender-based violence. Additionally, 80% of the young participants successfully formulated structured life plans aligned with their long-term professional and personal aspirations, indicating a profound shift in self-efficacy and future outlook.
The operational model of the program depends heavily on a hyper-local mentorship framework. Girls’ clubs meet weekly, blending recreational play with rigorous educational workshops. The mentors, comprising public school teachers, psychologists, and recognized community leaders, receive ongoing clinical and academic support from Glasswing International. This setup ensures that the curriculum is delivered by trusted community figures who understand the unique cultural nuances of the Los Santos region.
To cement these socio-educational gains, the program implements “Cafés Comunitarios” (Community Coffees). These specialized family workshops focus on emotional management, peaceful conflict resolution, and domestic violence prevention, recognizing that individual progress requires supportive home environments.
Accompanying a girl also implies working with the people who are part of her daily life.

From a business perspective, Starbucks Costa Rica’s integration of local sourcing with community reinvestment exemplifies a sophisticated approach to environmental, social, and governance goals. By linking a core menu item like the latte to a targeted community donation, the company successfully drives brand loyalty while fostering sustainable human capital in the very regions that supply its primary commodity.
