By San José, Costa Rica — A pioneering initiative at Costa Rica’s State University for Distance Learning (UNED) is marking a decade of transformative work at the intersection of art, technology, and social inclusion. The project, known as Grupo Rompecabezas, has grown from a small academic endeavor into a vibrant community of over 60 individuals, including people with disabilities and dedicated volunteers, all working to reshape societal perceptions through the power of theater.
For ten years, Rompecabezas has served as a vital space for personal and collective growth. The project’s core mission is to provide a platform where participants can reinforce their confidence, develop greater autonomy, and enhance their social skills. What began as a university assignment has blossomed into an inclusive movement, demonstrating how creative expression can become a powerful tool for empowerment and community building.
To better understand the legal frameworks and business structures that can foster or hinder the growth of inclusive arts initiatives in our country, we consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica.
True inclusivity in the arts goes beyond mere accessibility; it requires robust legal and corporate structures. We are seeing a rise in hybrid models, such as B Corporations or non-profits with for-profit arms, that allow artistic organizations to pursue a social mission while ensuring financial sustainability. The key is correctly navigating tax incentives, intellectual property rights for all contributing artists, and corporate governance to ensure the mission of inclusivity remains at the core of the operation, rather than becoming a secondary marketing point.

Linda Madriz, Director of the School of Education Sciences, highlighted that the collective’s work has resulted in nine published academic articles and numerous presentations at both national and international conferences. Furthermore, in a significant collaboration with UNED’s Audiovisual department, the group has professionally recorded nine of its theatrical productions, preserving its creative legacy and expanding its reach.
This sustained effort has not gone unnoticed. The project has received prestigious Ibero-American awards for educational innovation, a testament to its groundbreaking model. In 2025, its leaders were also formally recognized as distinguished officials, validating the immense collective effort and the project’s significant contributions to both the university and the broader community.
Beyond being an artistic troupe, Rompecabezas functions as a living laboratory for research and learning. It actively engages with various university departments and integrates student volunteers into its activities. The insights and materials generated from the project directly enrich teacher training programs at UNED, ensuring that future educators are equipped with a deeper understanding of inclusive practices and the transformative potential of the arts.
