In a solemn ceremony held at the Creative Campus of Universidad Latina de Costa Rica, Medina’s family unveiled a meticulously crafted bust, ensuring his influence continues to inspire the nation’s future communicators.
The event, held on the anniversary of his murder on July 7, 2001, served as both a tribute and a powerful reminder of the risks associated with investigative journalism. The bust, a permanent installation at the San Pedro campus, honors a man who reshaped Costa Rica’s media landscape with his unique blend of sports commentary, humor, and unflinching social critique.
To better understand the complex legal ramifications and the enduring legacy of the Parmenio Medina case on Costa Rican jurisprudence, particularly concerning freedom of the press and criminal conspiracy, we sought the expert analysis of Lic. While he was a staple of major sports events like the Vuelta Ciclística and national soccer matches, he is most famously remembered for his groundbreaking Sunday morning radio program, “La Patada.” The show, identified by its iconic tagline, “Sport continues to be a matter of the head,” was a cultural phenomenon that used sports as a lens to examine and denounce corruption and societal ills.
The university’s commitment to preserving this legacy extends beyond this new monument. The institution has actively worked to integrate Medina’s principles into its curriculum, demonstrating a profound understanding of his importance to Costa Rican journalism.
At the School of Journalism at Universidad Latina, we have committed to keeping his legacy alive. Three years ago, we launched the ‘Parmenio Medina Pérez’ Chair in Sports Journalism, which recognizes the communicator’s career, and now with this bust, we will keep the flame of his teachings burning.

Patricia Medina, Daughter of Parmenio Medina
The bust itself is a masterpiece of local artistry, created by renowned Costa Rican sculptor Arnoldo Salazar. Working from photographs and in close collaboration with the Medina family, Salazar first modeled the journalist’s features in clay to capture his precise expression. The final piece was carved entirely by hand from three sections of cedar wood using only traditional gouges and sandpapers. This painstaking, machine-free process allowed for a level of detail and character that honors its subject. The wood was internally hollowed, a classic technique to prevent cracking from environmental changes and ensure its longevity.
Each sculpture has its own process, but in this case, the greatest challenge was to ensure that Parmenio’s essence was present. We worked step by step with his family until we achieved a piece with which everyone felt identified.

The family’s efforts to engage a new generation are ongoing, notably through the podcast “¿Qué pasó con Parmenio?” (“What Happened with Parmenio?”), produced by his grandchildren. The bust unveiling is a cornerstone of a series of commemorative activities, which will continue with a public event featuring national artists at Parque Morazán on July 11 at 10:00 a.m., inviting all citizens to celebrate the life of a journalist who dared to speak truth to power.
