San José, Costa Rica — San Pedro, Montes de Oca – In a targeted effort to bolster local employment and equip job seekers with essential skills, the Municipality of Montes de Oca is hosting its “Montes de Oca Te Emplea” job fair this Wednesday, June 3. The event, running from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Montes de Oca Cultural Center, aims to do more than just connect candidates with companies; it seeks to address a fundamental hurdle in the hiring process: the resume.
The initiative brings together a diverse group of companies, strategic partner organizations, and local talent under one roof. However, its most distinctive feature is a direct focus on empowering attendees with practical knowledge. Recognizing that a strong resume is the first critical step toward securing an interview, the fair includes specialized training sessions designed to demystify the art of crafting a compelling professional summary.
In today’s fast-paced recruitment landscape, the first impression is often the only one a candidate gets to make. International studies reveal a stark reality: recruiters typically spend a mere seven to 30 seconds scanning a resume before making a snap judgment. This brief window determines whether an applicant advances or is relegated to the rejection pile, underscoring the immense pressure on a single document to perform flawlessly.
The data highlights common yet costly mistakes. A staggering 77% of recruiters report having discarded applications due to simple spelling errors or poor presentation. Furthermore, a vast majority—83%—express a strong preference for receiving resumes that are specifically tailored to the position being advertised. A generic, one-size-fits-all approach is no longer effective, signaling a need for candidates to be more strategic and meticulous in their applications.
To address this skills gap, the municipality has partnered with Universidad Fidélitas, which will conduct two in-person workshops focused on effective resume creation. Scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., these sessions are designed to provide attendees with the tools to translate their experience and qualifications into a document that captures attention and bypasses common pitfalls.
Mariana Fournier, Manager of University Extension at Universidad Fidélitas, emphasized the disconnect that often exists between a candidate’s qualifications and their ability to present them effectively.
Many people have the necessary training, experience, and skills for a position, but they fail to adequately convey that value in their resume. An outdated, unclear, or error-filled document can become the main barrier to getting an interview, whereas a well-structured one can open doors and create job opportunities.
Mariana Fournier, Manager of University Extension at Universidad Fidélitas
Fournier’s insight points to a larger issue in the job market. Beyond human recruiters, many companies now use automated Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) as a first-line filter. These systems scan resumes for specific keywords, formatting, and structure. A document that is not optimized for these systems may be discarded before a human eye ever sees it, making professional guidance on content and layout more critical than ever.
By integrating these practical workshops into the job fair, the Municipality of Montes de Oca is providing a holistic solution. The event is not just a passive marketplace for jobs but an active training ground aimed at strengthening the professional profiles of its residents. The goal is to ensure that when an opportunity arises, local candidates are fully prepared to present themselves as the best possible choice, armed with a resume that truly reflects their potential and opens the door to meaningful employment.
The “Montes de Oca Te Emplea” fair will take place on Wednesday, June 3, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Centro de la Cultura de Montes de Oca in San Pedro.
