However, the adoption rate is far from uniform across the industrial landscape. A closer analysis of the data reveals a significant technological divide between different operating regimes. Companies operating within Costa Rica’s specialized Free Trade Zones (Zonas Francas) show a much higher rate of adoption. In these zones, approximately 7 out of 10 enterprises—or 71.4 percent—have already incorporated AI into their software or operational systems.
This high adoption rate in Free Trade Zones contrasts sharply with businesses operating under the definitive regime, which represents the vast majority of the domestic business park. Among these standard local firms, the rate of AI utilization drops to 47.1 percent. This discrepancy highlights a critical opportunity for local business organizations and policymakers to help domestic companies bridge the technological gap and keep pace with global multinational standards.
Despite the rapid influx of automation and advanced software, the study brings highly reassuring news for the local labor market. A major concern surrounding the rise of Artificial Intelligence has been the potential for mass layoffs and the displacement of human labor. However, the current reality in Costa Rica’s manufacturing sector paints a remarkably different, far more optimistic picture.
A total of 95.1 percent of these companies indicated that the number of collaborators has not changed as a consequence of incorporating AI, with no significant differences by regime or size. Only 1.6 percent reported a reduction, and another 1.6 percent reported an increase in the number of workers.

This demographic stability in employment can be explained by looking at the specific tasks AI is currently performing. At this stage of technological maturity, manufacturers are primarily utilizing AI as a supportive tool rather than a direct replacement for manual labor. The technology is largely confined to administrative processes, general management, marketing, sales, and localized innovation, leaving the core assembly lines and production services still heavily reliant on human expertise.
This could help explain why, at this stage of adoption, its incorporation has not translated into significant changes in the number of workers.

The survey boasts a 95 percent confidence level and an average sampling error of 3.1 percent per stratum, making it one of the most reliable indicators of technological adoption in Central America to date.
