Guanacaste, Costa Rica — A unique economic empowerment initiative in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste province is setting the stage for a new wave of local female-led businesses. Under the banner of Proyecto Raíces, three innovative wellness products created by local women have been chosen to transition into pilot production, aiming for a grand commercial release in 2027. This collaborative program successfully blends traditional regional knowledge with modern market opportunities.
The project is the brainchild of a strategic partnership between Reserva Conchal, a prominent sustainable resort community, and Aromas para el Alma, a certified wellness and cosmetics brand. During a highly competitive pitching session held on September 2, 2026, 21 local women organized into seven teams presented their conceptual wellness proposals. These ideas were pitch-tested before a multidisciplinary jury featuring experts in marketing, hospitality, entrepreneurship, and community development.
The evaluation process was rigorous. The jury judged each submission based on its level of innovation, aromatic harmony, commercial viability, and its ability to tell a compelling narrative tied directly to the cultural and natural identity of Guanacaste. This ensures that the final products are not only commercially competitive but also carry a rich, authentic story that resonates with conscious consumers.
Proyecto Raíces represents much more than a training initiative. For Reserva Conchal, it is an opportunity to accompany women from our communities in strengthening their capabilities, recognizing the value of their ideas, and opening paths to convert this talent into real opportunities. It fills us with pride to see how their knowledge, creativity, and identity are transformed into proposals with the potential to reach the market and, in turn, generate value for their communities.
Gabriela Meza, Sustainability Manager of Reserva Conchal
The journey to this final selection was extensive, starting with 30 initial interviews across various Guanacaste communities. The final cohort of participants represented four pivotal local organizations: Mujeres de la Huerta Najui de Reserva Conchal, Fundación Futuro Brillante, CEPIA Costa Rica, and Abriendo Mentes. This diverse pool brought together different perspectives and deep-seated ecological knowledge of the tropical dry forest region.
The first winning product is Melora, a specialized facial soap created by Claudia Moreno Peralta, Filenia Espinoza Munguía, and Lucía Canales Treminio of the Huerta Najui collective. Melora features a rich blend of local honey, butterfly pea flower, and essential oils of ylang-ylang and orange, creating a soothing and culturally rooted skincare solution.
The second winner is a refreshing and hydrating aromatic gel developed by Josefina Betancourt B., Hazel Alfaro Allen, and Johanna Villegas from Abriendo Mentes. This product leverages regional flora, incorporating aloe vera, cashew seed oil, guarumo, and verbena, along with mint, eucalyptus, and guanílama essential oils. The final selected concept, Raíces de Guanacaste, is an exfoliating scrub for feet and rough skin created by Margorys Eliennys Flores, Auria Sardi, and Lorena Bartodano of CEPIA. It utilizes crushed rice, papaya seeds, vanilla, green tea tree, mint, and ylang-ylang.
The selected products will now undergo an intensive technical development phase managed by Aromas para el Alma. This phase will focus on formula standardization, stability testing, scalability, packaging, and labeling to prepare the items for the commercial market. To ensure that the benefits of this project extend deep into the community, 10% of the retail price of every sold product will be donated directly to the community organization represented by its creators, establishing a sustainable circle of economic growth.
