A total of 19 high school students from public schools under the Regional Education Directorate of Heredia were recently honored through the Líder Arte initiative. This program provides a unique platform for youth to channel their personal values, emotional landscapes, and life experiences into tangible works of art, proving that leadership and aesthetics can walk hand in hand.
The project is integrated into the Yo Lidero resource framework, which operates under the broader Guide Program designed by the Ministry of Public Education (MEP). Tailored for secondary students from the seventh to twelfth grades, the initiative encourages young artists to reflect deeply on leadership principles. By analyzing their daily challenges, participating students translate core life lessons into powerful visual narratives that speak to their peers and communities.

The competition portion of the event highlighted the exceptional caliber of Costa Rica’s specialized arts institutions. Students from the renowned Conservatorio de Castella claimed the top three spots in this year’s edition. Mariam Induni Corrales secured the first-place position with her delicate watercolor painting titled Gadesha. Sharon Chinchilla Jiménez followed in second place with an evocative painting named No era un cíclope, while Emily Alvarado Chavarría took third place with a compelling sculpture titled Umbral.
The dominance of the Conservatorio de Castella in the awards ceremony highlights the critical role that specialized arts education plays in the national school curriculum. These achievements demonstrate that when students are provided with structured artistic mentorship and resources, their ability to articulate complex sociological and psychological concepts increases exponentially. The winning pieces served as a testament to the students’ deep self-reflection.
Líder Arte is an initiative that arises as an opportunity to express what my experience has been in the guide lessons and to work on different themes linked to self-knowledge, knowledge of the environment and, of course, decision-making.

Evaluating these complex works required a multidisciplinary panel of judges who looked far beyond technical execution. The jury scrutinized each submission based on originality, creativity, technical artistic skill, and the clarity of the underlying message. Crucially, the artwork had to demonstrate a direct and meaningful connection to the leadership concepts championed by the Yo Lidero curriculum, including empathy, bravery, active civic participation, and healthy self-esteem.
This initiative underscores the power of public-private partnerships in reshaping Costa Rica’s educational landscape. The Yo Lidero resources are the fruit of a formal cooperation agreement established in 2022 between the MEP and the non-profit organization Fundación Mejoremos Costa Rica. By pooling public resources and private philanthropic guidance, the partnership has succeeded in introducing emotional intelligence and leadership training to thousands of public school students.
Programs like Líder Arte reflect a broader, ongoing modernization effort within Costa Rica’s public school system. From structural upgrades in regional infrastructure to international educational alliances, the country is consistently investing in comprehensive student development. By equipping the younger generation with both emotional resilience and creative freedom, Costa Rica is fostering a new class of community leaders prepared to face the economic and social challenges of the future.
