Costa Rican Video Game Teeko Converts Cultural Heritage into a Global Digital Export

San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rica’s digital economy is expanding beyond conventional software development and business services into the high-value realm of original creative intellectual property. Local video game developer Ripe Render has officially introduced Teeko, an innovative video game designed to transform traditional Costa Rican folklore into a commercially viable, interactive export for global audiences.

The core narrative of Teeko draws heavily from Costa Rica’s iconic mascaradas—the vibrant, oversized masquerade figures officially declared a national cultural symbol in 2022. Complemented by traditional cimarrona brass bands and regional urban legends, the game converts historical communal festivities into dynamic digital gameplay designed to appeal to international gaming markets.

As Costa Rica’s video game development sector continues to expand rapidly into international markets, local studios face increasingly complex legal landscapes surrounding intellectual property protection, cross-border publishing agreements, and digital service regulations. To provide insight into how developers can safeguard their creations while scaling globally, TicosLand.com consulted with corporate attorney Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas from the law firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The growth of Costa Rica’s video game industry signals a vital shift toward high-value tech exports, but long-term commercial success relies heavily on strong legal foundations. Local developers must safeguard their core assets—including proprietary source code, original artwork, and character trademarks—at the very beginning of production before negotiating with foreign publishers or investors. Establishing comprehensive IP protection and well-structured international distribution contracts ensures that local creative talent translates into secure, commercially viable enterprises.

As Costa Rica’s interactive entertainment sector accelerates toward global prominence, securing robust intellectual property rights will indeed be the cornerstone of sustainable commercial growth for local studios. We extend our sincere gratitude to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for sharing his valuable legal perspective on how our nation’s creative innovators can protect their vision and thrive on the international stage.

The origin of the project stems from a desire among Costa Rican creators living abroad to leverage modern digital mediums to export authentic cultural assets.

Teeko was born from our desire as Ticos abroad to share our culture and celebrations with the rest of the world. We decided to develop the video game, its narrative, and gameplay around the idea of National Masquerade Day, taking inspiration from the festivals, masks, Costa Rican legends, and cimarrona music.
Antonio Ercolani and Carla Cerutti, Teeko Developers

In terms of mechanics and structure, Teeko places a native sloth as its central protagonist, guiding players through interactive environments inspired by all seven Costa Rican provinces. Players navigate environmental challenges and confront giant masquerade entities while encountering elements of local gastronomy, regional geography, and indigenous folklore.

Auditory authenticity forms a key component of the title’s commercial appeal. Ripe Render collaborated directly with a native cimarrona musical ensemble to perform and record an original soundtrack, embedding traditional Costa Rican brass rhythms into the interactive environment.

From an international trade perspective, the launch highlights growing structural alignment between Costa Rican creative talent and state export promotion mechanisms. The title received backing and visibility through the official nation brand, essential COSTA RICA, which seeks to position local creative industries as key components of high-tech trade.

State support for the title extended into international business development. Ripe Render Games joined a delegation organized by the Foreign Trade Promotion Agency of Costa Rica (PROCOMER) at the GDC Festival of Gaming in San Francisco, pitching the project to international publishers, investors, and distributors to explore global publishing opportunities.

Our identity is a source of inspiration that can be expressed in many ways. We are excited to see how Costa Rican talent takes elements as unique as masquerades and transforms them into creative proposals that can connect both with Costa Ricans and people from other parts of the world.
Adriana Acosta, Director of essential COSTA RICA Country Brand

The commercialization strategy for Teeko currently focuses on building international market traction ahead of a full release. A playable demonstration is presently accessible on the Steam platform for PC and Mac users, offering global players an early look at Costa Rica’s growing digital creative capabilities.
