Costa Rica Leverages Anime Pop Culture to Conquer High Value Asian Coffee Markets

San José, Costa Rica — In a strategic fusion of agricultural tradition and modern creative marketing, Costa Rica’s national brand strategy is taking aim at East Asia’s most discerning beverage consumers. Promoted through essential COSTA RICA, the nation has launched a digital marketing campaign titled Producers of Wellbeing (Productores de Bienestar), utilizing authentic anime-style animation to captivate audiences in Japan and South Korea. By adopting a local cultural medium, the campaign bridges geographic distances to reintroduce Costa Rican specialty coffee to a fast-growing demographic of Asian coffee enthusiasts.

The initial phase in Japan yielded remarkable digital engagement, demonstrating the power of culturally adapted marketing. Running between May 15 and August 15, the campaign reached more than 7.2 million consumers and generated over 21.4 million digital impressions across targeted platforms. Building on this momentum, trade officials expanded the initiative into South Korea on October 1, targeting urban consumers who increasingly prioritize quality, origin, and social responsibility in their purchasing habits.

To better understand the regulatory frameworks and trade mechanisms supporting the expansion of Costa Rican coffee into competitive Asian markets, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished legal expert from Bufete de Costa Rica.

Navigating Asian markets presents incredible growth opportunities for Costa Rican coffee exporters, but it requires strict compliance with complex tariff structures, phytosanitary standards, and intellectual property safeguards. Establishing robust international supply contracts and leveraging geographical indications are essential steps to secure premium positioning while protecting trade interests across East Asia.

As the demand for specialty coffee rapidly expands across Asia, mastering these critical legal frameworks and strategic safeguards will undoubtedly be the key to ensuring Costa Rica’s premium producers thrive on the global stage. We extend our sincere gratitude to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for sharing his valuable perspective and expertise on this crucial topic for our export sector.

Promoting a product as central to our identity as coffee invites us to discover new ways of telling Costa Rica’s story. As part of our B2C strategy, we seek to connect with consumers in each market through content that resonates with their interests and media habits. In Japan and South Korea, anime offered an opportunity to present our coffee in a fresh and approachable manner without losing sight of its essence and special attributes. Ultimately, we want to awaken the curiosity of new audiences so that through our coffee, they discover a bit more of Costa Rica.

The campaign’s commercial focus aligns directly with underlying export growth across East Asia. According to financial data from the Foreign Trade Promotion Agency of Costa Rica (PROCOMER), coffee exports to Japan expanded at an average annual rate of 11% between 2022 and 2025, climbing from $6.6 million to $9 million. By July 2026 alone, shipments to Japan had reached $9.4 million, surpassing the total revenue recorded for the entirety of 2025. Similarly, sales to South Korea reached $8.6 million by July 2026, solidifying green coffee (café oro) as Costa Rica’s top export product to the South Korean market.

Beyond traditional hot brews, the Producers of Wellbeing campaign introduces inventive culinary applications designed specifically for local palates. Digital materials showcase recipes combining coffee with local culinary trends, such as Matcha Coffee Jelly with condensed milk, Affogato Matcha, coffee and white chocolate dorayaki, green tea cheesecake, Iced Coffee Matcha Latte, and Tapioca Bubble Coffee Matcha. Simultaneously, the storytelling emphasizes critical ethical markers, emphasizing that Costa Rican coffee is certified deforestation-free, over 90% is harvested on small family farms, and the industry carries a 200-year legacy of sustainable production.

Our coffee has so much to tell beyond a good cup. Behind every bean are farming families, sustainable practices, international recognition, and a history of more than 200 years that forms part of our identity. With Producers of Wellbeing, we want to highlight all these attributes in a fresh and engaging way. For this campaign, we also relied on Costa Rican audiovisual talent to create this piece and translate our narrative into anime. It is a way to showcase to the world not only the quality of our products, but also Costa Rica’s creative capacity to produce content capable of connecting with global audiences.

This initiative stems from a broader Business-to-Consumer (B2C) framework rooted in data-driven market intelligence. Essential COSTA RICA synthesized findings from more than 30 international trade studies and consumer behavior metrics to determine how best to position national exports abroad. The research identified four high-potential agricultural sectors—pineapple, banana, cassava, and coffee—while providing actionable cultural intelligence on how to tailor media outreach to individual consumer mindsets in target countries.

By blending creative domestic talent with high-value agricultural commodities, Costa Rica is establishing a blueprint for modern soft-power trade promotion. Capitalizing on Asia’s rising demand for premium, ethically sourced specialty goods, the nation demonstrates that modern agribusiness success relies as much on storytelling and cultural relevance as it does on crop yields and logistics.
