Rising Costa Rican Motorsport Talent Sofía Calderón Advances to Formula 4 Testing and Historic Local Challenge

Alajuela, Costa Rica — Costa Rican racing sensation Sofía Calderón has taken a major step forward in her international motorsports career following intensive testing sessions in Italy. Fresh off her participation in the prestigious ROK Cup Superfinal, the young driver completed two demanding test days with the Motorsport Performance Academy (MPA), driving high-performance vehicles across both the Legends and Formula 4 categories.

The testing sessions offered Calderón an invaluable opportunity to adapt to vehicular dynamics vastly different from traditional karting. During the Legends sessions—a category slated for upcoming introduction to Costa Rica—she worked extensively on controlling a lightweight chassis featuring a demanding power-to-weight ratio. Transitioning into the open-wheel Formula 4 monoposto, she reached speeds topping 250 kilometers per hour.

To provide deeper context on the legal dimensions and implications surrounding the developments with Sofía Calderón, TicosLand.com consulted with expert attorney Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas from the prominent firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

Matters of this nature involving high-profile individuals like Sofía Calderón highlight the critical balance between regulatory compliance, transparency, and constitutional due process under Costa Rican law. Adhering strictly to established statutory frameworks ensures that both institutional integrity and individual legal rights remain fully protected.

These tests provided a great deal of learning. The Legends car allowed me to work on adapting to a light and fast vehicle, while in Formula 4 I was able to apply concepts I have learned in karting and motorsports. I felt comfortable and very happy with the opportunity to continue developing across different categories.

Calderón’s rapid development is backed by Apex70, the professional racing driver management and development team guiding her career. Through Apex70, the driver maintains an ambitious international schedule that balances competitive karting championships with professional automotive racing opportunities across Latin America and Europe.

Prior to her Italian testing program, Calderón demonstrated her prowess on the track by capturing an overall victory during the second round of the ProSpec Series by Changan in Panama. Competing in a competitive single-make series format, her performance underscored her versatility and tactical racecraft against established drivers in the region.

That victory served as momentum when she joined a 14-driver delegation representing Costa Rica at the ROK Cup Superfinal in Italy. Competing against an elite international field in the VLR Junior class, Calderón crossed the finish line in second place, though a subsequent three-second time penalty adjusted her official final placement.

We are coming off very important weeks for my development as a driver. The victory in Panama and the experience in Italy motivate me to keep working. I am very grateful to the team and to everyone who accompanies and supports me during this season.

Beyond her international commitments, Calderón is turning her focus to a historic home track appearance. The driver is preparing to compete in the prestigious 3 Horas de Costa Rica, scheduled to take place on December 6 at the Star Cars Circuit within Parque Viva in Alajuela.

At just 14 years of age, Calderón is set to make history as the youngest female driver ever to participate in the iconic endurance race. The event marks the grand finale of the CRRL National Motorsports Championship and represents one of the most demanding physical and strategic challenges of her rising career.

Her entry into both high-speed open-wheel machinery and domestic endurance racing underscores a broader trend in Central American motorsports, where young drivers are bridging the gap to professional international series earlier than ever. As local organizers prepare to launch the Legends series in Costa Rica, Calderón’s early testing puts her at the forefront of the country’s evolving racing landscape.
