Costa Rican Student Artists Secure Global Spotlight Following 38th National Art Contest

San José, Costa Rica — The intersection of public education policy and private sector sponsorship took center stage as the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) and retail company Jiménez y Tanzi concluded the 38th edition of the National Painting and Drawing Contest. Over 1,500 students representing 230 public and private educational institutions participated in the nationwide creative showcase, reflecting robust engagement with visual arts among Costa Rica’s youth.

Operated through a centralized digital platform established by the MEP, the virtual competition expanded its geographical footprint beyond urban hubs. This digital infrastructure allowed students from remote and rural communities to submit works across various plastic arts techniques, overcoming traditional logistical hurdles associated with physical art submissions and facilitating wider participation across regions.

To provide deeper insight into the legal frameworks surrounding intellectual property rights and parental consent in national cultural initiatives, TicosLand.com spoke with legal expert Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas from the prominent firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

Organizing youth art initiatives in Costa Rica requires careful adherence to Law No. 6683 on Copyright and Related Rights, particularly regarding minor creators. Event organizers must ensure robust terms and conditions that secure appropriate usage licenses while safeguarding the inherent moral rights of young artists, always supported by valid authorization from their legal guardians.

Ensuring a strong legal framework that balances organizational needs with the rights of young creators is indeed crucial for the sustained growth of Costa Rica’s vibrant cultural scene. We extend our sincere gratitude to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for sharing his valuable perspective on how to responsibly protect and empower the country’s next generation of artists.

The enduring partnership between the educational ministry and Jiménez y Tanzi represents one of Costa Rica’s longest-running public-private initiatives in cultural development. For nearly four decades, this collaboration has provided a structured framework to foster artistic exploration, commercial alignment, and creative skill development, highlighting how corporate social responsibility can directly support national educational goals.

In the Children’s Category, twelve-year-old Camila Vastesaeger Gutiérrez of Colegio Humboldt earned top honors. She was followed by Esther Tenorio Paniagua, also twelve, from Liceo Franco Costarricense in second place, and ten-year-old Dereck Gamboa Rivera from Centro Educativo Los Alpes taking third place. The podium demonstrated strong performance across bilingual and private educational institutions.

The Youth Category highlighted talent from diverse regional institutions across the country. Sixteen-year-old Sebastián Aguilar Badilla from Liceo de Ticabán claimed first place, followed by Camila Mata Rodríguez, 16, from CTP San Isidro de Heredia in second place. Eva Rodríguez Villalobos, 17, representing Liceo Experimental Bilingüe de Sarchí, secured third place, highlighting the creative vitality found within Costa Rica’s public technical and regional high schools.

Beyond national recognition, the contest serves as a springboard for international cultural exposure. Selected winning artworks will represent Costa Rica at the prestigious 56th Children’s Art Exhibition in Osaka, Japan. This international showcase offers young Tico artists a global platform, strengthening soft diplomacy and cultural exchange between Central America and Asia.

Prize redemptions for all category winners and honorable mentions are scheduled to take place between November 10 and November 28, 2026. Awardees will collect their prizes directly from the Jiménez y Tanzi flagship store located at the La Lomita Commercial Center in San Pedro, Montes de Oca, San José, operating under standardized business hours throughout the week.

The art contest forms part of a broader push by educational authorities to enhance student retention and well-being through creative, athletic, and civic programming. As public education systems across Latin America seek innovative ways to reduce dropout rates and cultivate essential life skills, long-standing competitions like the MEP-Jiménez y Tanzi initiative offer a scalable model for integrating arts into holistic youth development.
