Over 40 children, ranging from just four to six years old, formed 10 distinct teams representing all nine of CEN-CINAI’s regional directorates. Each office held preliminary competitions to identify the most promising teams to represent their respective regions. The competitive spirit was evident, with the Huetar Caribe Regional Directorate earning the distinction of sending two separate teams to the final event in Cartago, showcasing the deep well of talent being nurtured in that area.
During the preparatory phase, the children delved into the world of educational robotics using specialized toolkits from the “UNEARTHED” season. Officials from the institution emphasize that this play-based learning model is profoundly effective. It actively promotes the development of critical competencies such as logical-mathematical thinking, enhances creativity, instills the value of teamwork, and builds resilience through problem-solving. As the children collaborated to overcome challenges posed by their robotic tasks, they were not just learning about gears and sensors but also about communication and shared success. In recognition of their hard work, every participating team was honored with medals and special awards, celebrating their pioneering spirit.
The government’s commitment to this forward-thinking educational strategy is backed by a substantial and rapidly growing financial investment. In 2025, the National Directorate of CEN-CINAI allocated over ₡1.144 billion to launch the first phase of its robotics program. For 2026, demonstrating immense confidence in the program’s impact, the budget was more than doubled, soaring to an impressive ₡2.615 billion for its second implementation stage.
This massive infusion of resources is already transforming the educational landscape for tens of thousands of children. Currently, the program benefits 28,491 preschoolers across 464 CEN-CINAI centers nationwide. The long-term objective is clear: to systematically reduce societal and technological gaps, ensuring that all children, regardless of their background, have the opportunity to develop critical technological skills from an early age, positioning Costa Rica as a leader in innovative education.
