The current daily average of murders has fallen to a range of 1.9 to 2.1, a crucial metric that informs the year-end projection. Regardless of the final figure within this estimated range, it would signify the first time in the Chaves presidency that the annual total has dipped below the 800 mark. This potential achievement stands in stark contrast to the record-setting violence that defined his term, with 905 homicides in 2023, followed by 876 in 2024, and 873 last year.
This positive trend appears to be a nationwide phenomenon. According to the OIJ, every province in the country is reporting a reduction in cases, with the notable exception of Cartago, which continues to face unique security challenges. The widespread nature of the decline suggests that recent security strategies may be having a broad and tangible impact across different regions.
