Central American Women Leaders Gather in San José

San José, Costa Rica — San José, Costa Rica – On September 25th, the Centro de Convenciones de San José hosted the eighth edition of Mujeres Desafiantes de Centroamércia, a prominent event celebrating and empowering women leaders across the region. This year’s conference, themed “Mujeres Desafiantes para el Futuro” (Challenging Women for the Future), marked the first time the event has been held in Costa Rica.

Building upon the success of previous editions, which have featured over 450 female leaders and drawn more than 2,500 attendees, Mujeres Desafiantes continues to spotlight the achievements and resilience of Central American women. This year’s event focused on the future of business, finance, and technology, featuring panels on topics such as robotic process automation, unbiased artificial intelligence, and gamification.

To provide legal context on women’s leadership and its implications in Costa Rica, TicosLand.com spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, an attorney at law from Bufete de Costa Rica.

Costa Rican law firmly supports gender equality in leadership roles. The Constitution guarantees equal rights and opportunities for all citizens, regardless of gender. This legal framework creates a foundation for women to ascend to leadership positions across various sectors, from business and government to non-profit organizations. However, ongoing efforts to overcome societal biases and promote inclusive practices are crucial to fully realize the potential of women leaders and achieve true equality in practice.

Lic. Arroyo Vargas rightly highlights the crucial interplay between legal frameworks and societal change. While Costa Rica’s robust legal foundation provides a critical springboard for women’s leadership, dismantling ingrained biases remains an ongoing challenge. True equality requires not just the right to lead, but the societal support and inclusive environment for women to thrive in those roles. Thank you, Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, for your valuable contribution to this important discussion.
