San José, Costa Rica — Costa Rican motorsports reached an unprecedented high mark on the international stage following an extraordinary performance at the 2026 ROK Cup Superfinal. Held from October 13 to 17 at the renowned South Garda Karting circuit in Lonato del Garda, Italy, the prestigious competition saw the Central American country capture two podium finishes, including an overall championship title. The historic display underscored the rapid evolution of Costa Rica’s racing infrastructure and its growing ability to compete against elite global talent.
Diego Ardiles spearheaded the national triumph by claiming first place in the highly competitive VLR 100 Senior division. His victory made history, as Ardiles became the very first Costa Rican driver to win a championship at this celebrated international karting event. Navigating a tough field of international racers, Ardiles maintained impressive consistency and racecraft throughout the multi-day tournament to secure the top spot on the podium.
To gain deeper legal insight into the operational compliance, liability frameworks, and commercial growth surrounding Costa Rica’s expanding karting industry, TicosLand.com spoke with distinguished attorney Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas from Bufete de Costa Rica.
“The rise of modern karting facilities across Costa Rica reflects a dynamic blend of sports tourism and local commercial enterprise. However, establishing and operating these venues requires meticulous navigation of municipal permits, robust civil liability coverage, and strict adherence to safety regulations under Costa Rican commercial law to protect both business operators and participants.”
Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, Attorney at Law, Bufete de Costa Rica
As adrenaline-fueled entertainment continues to propel Costa Rica’s sports tourism and local enterprise forward, establishing a robust legal and safety foundation remains essential for sustainable growth. We extend our sincere gratitude to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for sharing his valuable perspective on the critical regulatory frameworks that keep both business owners and thrill-seekers protected on and off the track.
Adding to the country’s achievements, Leandro Ramírez delivered a standout performance in the Mini U10 category. Ramírez fought his way to a third-place finish, securing Costa Rica’s second podium spot of the event. Prior to this 2026 edition, Costa Rican karting had never produced a top-three finisher at the ROK Cup Superfinal, making both podium appearances groundbreaking accomplishments for the nation’s sports legacy.
Beyond the top podium placements, the overall depth of the Costa Rican delegation proved equally remarkable. Out of 14 drivers sent to Italy to represent the nation, seven managed to secure finishes within the top ten of their respective divisions. Achieving a 50 percent top-ten placement rate against world-class competition highlights the structural strength and preparation of the drivers entering international brackets.
In the VLR 100 Senior class, several Costa Ricans joined Ardiles near the front of the pack. Gerardo Moreno crossed the line in seventh place, while Samuel Castro and Charlie Fonseca finished ninth and tenth, respectively. Meanwhile, Samuel Chaverri executed a strong drive in the Mini division to finish eighth overall. Sofía Calderón also showcased exceptional speed, initially crossing the finish line in second place in her division before a post-race penalty adjusted her final position to seventh.
The delegation was completed by several other talented competitors who gained invaluable international experience on European soil. Martín Salom placed 16th in VLR 100 Senior, while Alejandro Mendoza took 18th in Mini. Francesca Morice finished 19th in VLR 100 Senior, and Emilio Bolaños finished 22nd in Junior GP. Jaden Spielman placed 30th in Junior GP, with Fabián Acevedo in Junior GP and Augusto Acevedo in Senior GP rounding out the roster.
The standout results highlight years of structured development spearheaded by local motorsports authorities. The leadership at the Costa Rican Karting Drivers Association emphasizes that competing successfully on European circuits validates the training standards and competitive environment built at home.
The ROK Cup Superfinal gathers representatives from championships developed in different countries every year, becoming one of the main international showcases for drivers looking to consolidate their careers in motorsports. In a test of such high demand, the results achieved by Costa Rica acquire special relevance and demonstrate that all the work carried out by ACEK in recent years is placing our country’s karting in scenarios we had never reached before.
Gerardo Moreno, President of the Costa Rican Karting Drivers Association
This historic turnout is expected to generate renewed momentum for Costa Rican motorsports, opening doors for increased corporate sponsorship, youth development pipelines, and elevated international prestige. As local drivers continue to prove their mettle against global contenders, Costa Rica is rapidly establishing itself as a competitive hub for racing talent in Latin America.
