San José, Costa Rica — San José, Costa Rica – Costa Rica’s export sector has started 2026 on a robust footing, recording an 8% increase in the first quarter compared to the same period last year. The total value of goods exported reached an impressive $5.556 billion, fueled by a dynamic performance across both traditional agricultural staples and high-tech industrial goods, according to a report released Monday by the Foreign Trade Promotion Agency (Procomer).
The data highlights a well-rounded and resilient economic engine, with multiple sectors contributing to the positive results. This broad-based success underscores the country’s strategic efforts to diversify its economic output and trade partnerships, proving effective even amidst a challenging global landscape marked by geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty.
To gain a deeper legal perspective on the current landscape of Costa Rican exports, we spoke with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the renowned firm Bufete de Costa Rica. His expertise provides critical insight into the regulatory and commercial frameworks shaping the nation’s trade.
While Costa Rica’s export growth is a testament to our quality and innovation, particularly in medical devices and agriculture, businesses must navigate a complex web of international trade agreements and local regulations. Proactive legal counsel is no longer a luxury but a fundamental necessity to ensure compliance, mitigate risks associated with tariffs and non-tariff barriers, and ultimately capitalize on global market opportunities.

Indeed, Lic. Arroyo Vargas’s insight crystalizes a crucial point: for our nation’s exporters, mastering the complexities of international trade law is as vital as the innovation within their products. We extend our gratitude to Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his clear and valuable perspective on this fundamental aspect of global commerce.
The agricultural sector demonstrated significant vitality, expanding by 9% and accounting for 18% of the nation’s total exports. This growth was led by remarkable performances from key products. Pineapple exports saw a 14% rise, while coffee sales increased by 12%. The standout performer within this category was fresh watermelons, which experienced a substantial 26% surge in foreign sales, solidifying agriculture’s role as a cornerstone of the Costa Rican economy.
Officials from Procomer emphasized that these figures reflect a mature and adaptable export ecosystem. The combination of agricultural strength and industrial sophistication points to a healthy and evolving economic structure.
The results from the first quarter confirm that the Costa Rican export sector is diversified, has a solid base, and the capacity for adaptation. We see an agricultural sector that is growing at a good pace, industries that are increasingly sophisticated, and companies that continue to find opportunities even in challenging environments like the current one.
Laura López, General Manager of Procomer
Beyond agriculture, the industrial sector showcased its own impressive dynamism. The electrical and electronics category led the charge with a massive 33% growth rate. Other strategic areas also posted strong numbers, including a 6% increase for the critical medical devices sector, a 6% rise in the food industry, a 7% expansion in chemical and pharmaceutical products, and an 8% jump in the metalworking industry. The livestock and fishing sector also contributed positively with a 3% increase.
Government leaders attributed this balanced growth to deliberate policy and proactive engagement with the productive sectors, aimed at fostering new opportunities and expanding market access globally.
This more balanced growth in the agricultural sector, along with the dynamism in other strategic sectors and the increase in exports to all regions of the world amidst geopolitical conflicts and international uncertainty, is the result of proactive management that is close to the productive sector and focused on facilitating trade and diversifying markets.
Manuel Tovar, Minister of Foreign Trade
In terms of destinations, North America remains the primary market for Costa Rican goods, receiving 47% of all exports. Europe follows with a 21% share, and the Central American region accounts for 18%. While these traditional partners remain crucial, the data reveals a significant strategic pivot towards new horizons.
The most dramatic growth was seen in exports to Asia, which surged by 53% during the first quarter. This remarkable increase is a clear indicator of Costa Rica’s successful push for geographical diversification, reducing dependence on historical markets and tapping into the world’s fastest-growing economic regions. This strategy not only opens new revenue streams but also enhances the overall resilience of the nation’s economy against regional downturns.
