I believe it was a positive meeting, one that was handled with respect and dialogue. It seems to me there is a willingness, or at least in this first meeting we found on both sides, of course, a willingness to discuss the legislative bills and create a fluid communication channel to talk about legislative issues and the country’s major problems.

One of the most significant points of convergence was the urgent need to combat organized crime. Villalta confirmed that his party and the Fernández administration share the goal of strengthening the state’s capacity to dismantle criminal networks. He noted that Frente Amplio presented several specific proposals aimed at achieving this objective, which were received with interest by the president.
It seems to me it’s an important topic, there are points of agreement. We proposed several important bills to strengthen the fight against organized crime, pursue criminal organizations, sanction public officials who are linked to or facilitate drug trafficking, the issue of faster lifting of banking secrecy to pursue organized crime and, in general, we had a very interesting discussion where there are points of coincidence on the issue of security.

Despite the common ground on fighting criminality, Villalta was unequivocal about his party’s “red lines.” He made it clear that Frente Amplio would fiercely oppose any security measures that infringe upon the constitutional rights and guarantees of Costa Rican citizens. The party rejects strategies that it believes would unfairly penalize working-class communities that are often the primary victims of organized crime.
We were clear in presenting the issues on which this legislative faction will never yield, such as taking away rights and guarantees from the citizenry, or entering a neighborhood punishing or harming working people, the very people who suffer from the onslaught of organized crime, and we proposed alternatives to the president.

Another key topic of discussion was the persistent environmental and social crisis at Crucitas, the site of rampant illegal gold mining. Villalta urged the government to seriously consider a legislative proposal drafted by Frente Amplio. He described the bill as a comprehensive, technically sound solution designed not only to eradicate illegal mining and protect the environment but also to create sustainable economic resources for the local communities affected by the crisis.
On the issue of Crucitas, we proposed to the government the need to bring to the table the bill that the Frente Amplio has presented, which is a serious, technical, well-founded proposal that allows for solving the problem of illegal mining while protecting the environment, but also generating resources for local communities.

While this initial meeting represents a promising step toward more collaborative governance, the path forward remains complex.
