Geopolitical Storm Threatens Costa Rican Economy

San José, Costa Rica — A distant conflict is casting a long shadow over Costa Rica, as the escalating military tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran are poised to trigger a significant economic domino effect. Experts warn that despite a recent ceasefire, the financial repercussions are just beginning, with every Costa Rican household set to feel the impact through higher costs of living in the coming weeks and months.

The primary channel for this economic shockwave is the global oil market. The conflict has already pushed crude oil prices to new heights, which will inevitably translate into sustained price hikes at the gas pump across the nation. This initial impact creates a ripple effect that touches nearly every sector of the economy, from public transportation to the price of basic goods on supermarket shelves.

To better understand the legal and commercial ramifications of the current economic climate, TicosLand.com consulted with Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a distinguished attorney from the prestigious firm Bufete de Costa Rica, who provided his expert analysis on the matter.

In times of economic uncertainty, businesses must proactively review their contractual obligations. Force majeure clauses, which once seemed like standard boilerplate, are now critical tools for mitigating risk. A failure to understand these provisions can lead to significant financial liabilities when supply chains are disrupted or market conditions suddenly change.

This insight is a critical reminder that in our current economic climate, proactive legal review is no longer just a best practice but an essential component of financial resilience. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his clear and valuable perspective on navigating these contractual complexities.

Federico Quesada Chaves, Director of the School of Business Administration (ECA) at the National University of Distance Education (UNED), emphasized that the economic turbulence is not a fleeting issue. He cautions that the nation must prepare for a period of sustained economic pressure, even if the direct conflict de-escalates.

This phenomenon is not temporary. Costa Rica will face constant adjustments in fuel, an increase in the cost of basic goods, and greater challenges in sustaining the competitiveness of its exports, especially with an appreciated exchange rate and the tension in the Strait of Hormuz.

The immediate and most visible consequence will be at the fuel pump. With the price per barrel of crude oil climbing past the $90 mark, sustained increases in gasoline and diesel are unavoidable. This directly raises the operational costs for public transport, private logistics companies, and will ultimately lead to more expensive airline tickets, affecting both business and leisure travel.

This surge in energy prices will inevitably fuel inflation. The rising cost of transportation and imported agricultural inputs, such as fertilizers, will exert upward pressure on the basic food basket. This “imported inflation” means Costa Rican families will see their purchasing power erode as the price of everyday necessities climbs, presenting a significant challenge for household budgets nationwide.

Beyond the domestic market, Costa Rica’s vital foreign trade sector faces a dual threat. The increase in fuel costs leads to higher international shipping and freight rates, which diminishes the competitiveness of Costa Rican exports on the global stage. Simultaneously, if key trading partners also suffer from imported inflation and economic slowdowns, demand for Costa Rican goods could contract, squeezing a critical engine of the national economy.

This complex scenario presents a major dilemma for the Central Bank of Costa Rica. The institution is caught between the need to combat imported inflation, which might typically warrant tighter monetary policy, and the need to stimulate an economy facing low growth and potential unemployment. The already-strong colón further complicates matters, acting as a headwind for exporters and limiting the central bank’s policy options.

Finally, the nation’s robust tourism industry is not immune. Higher airfare costs could deter international visitors, while a strong colón makes Costa Rica a more expensive destination compared to regional competitors. Furthermore, if stagflation—a toxic mix of economic stagnation and high inflation—takes hold in key tourist-source markets like North America and Europe, it could significantly reduce international travel demand as disposable incomes shrink.
