The monumental undertaking, which began in Hanover, Germany, on July 1, 2025, is designed to demonstrate the long-distance viability and resilience of electric mobility. Zietlow’s planned route spans more than 75 countries and covers an astonishing 60,000 kilometers, a testament to both human and mechanical endurance. His arrival in Central America marks a critical phase of the journey’s American leg, which commenced in the United States and Mexico in May 2026.

This is not Zietlow’s first foray into record-breaking automotive challenges. In 2019, he and his team conquered the Pan-American Highway, driving a Volkswagen Amarok V6 TDI from Alaska to Ushuaia, Argentina, in a record time of just 10 days, 19 hours, and 16 minutes. That journey covered over 22,000 kilometers across 14 countries, facing down extreme weather and terrain. Now, he faces a new kind of challenge, one defined not by diesel power but by battery range and charging infrastructure.
The vehicle for this new chapter is the Volkswagen ID. Buzz, a modern interpretation of the classic microbus, equipped with an 86 kWh battery pack that provides a range exceeding 400 kilometers. The choice of vehicle is symbolic, representing a shift from the fossil-fueled adventures of the past to a new era of sustainable exploration. My company is called Challenge4 and, honestly, in all my projects with Volkswagen I have never had a moment where I thought I could not continue. We only had one major problem once in Africa, where we had to change an engine. That was a big deal, but other than that, we never had serious doubts before or after. I am a big fan of Australia. Seeing kangaroos jumping near the vehicle was very unique. Luckily, the car was not damaged, only the lower protection bars. I also find the interactions with people very memorable. In China, for example, many people greet you from their cars when they overtake you on the highway. And here in Costa Rica, while we were climbing the two-lane road to this place, we also had a lot of interaction with people. Those spontaneous moments are always very special.

He has observed firsthand the starkly different rates at which nations are embracing electric mobility. This ground-level perspective reveals a complex global patchwork of policy, infrastructure, and cultural attitudes toward EVs.
Every country is trying, in one way or another, to move towards electric mobility, but the speed is very different. Some countries are advancing rapidly, while others remain stagnant or even regress. For example, in the United States there is still a strong culture around V8 engines, and that surprised me. On the other hand, countries like China are really pushing electric mobility with great force. You can clearly see the level of commitment they have to electrification.

When asked to distill the essence of this massive undertaking, Zietlow offered a simple, candid summary that captures the duality of such an extreme challenge: “Actually, I would use two words: fantastic and exhausting.” After visiting over 130 countries across his career, he acknowledges a world with more complex borders but remains optimistic, finding that the electric vehicle itself serves as a bridge to connect with people who see it as a symbol of a cleaner future.
Zietlow’s journey is more than a quest for another entry in a record book; it is a real-world validation of electric technology and a powerful statement about the future of global travel.
