Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad Launches Prepaid Electricity Service to Enhance Customer Flexibility in Costa Rica

The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) has introduced a groundbreaking prepaid electricity service, set to commence on July 1. This initiative aims to provide customers with greater control and flexibility over their energy consumption and expenses.

The service is available to residential customers equipped with smart meters (AMI). Enrollment can be voluntary for those with current payments or mandatory for those with chronic payment issues or meter tampering.

Customers who opt-in voluntarily can convert their security deposit into prepaid credit, while those enrolled due to payment issues can return to a traditional plan after 18 months of compliance with prepaid terms.

Pricing for the prepaid service remains consistent with the traditional model. Customers can recharge their accounts with amounts ranging from ₡3,000 to ₡25,000 at ICE branches or via Banco Nacional platforms. Unlike traditional billing, the prepaid balance does not expire at the end of the month.

Users can manage their consumption through ICE’s digital platforms, offering detailed insights into their energy usage and costs.

In TicosLand we have analyzed that this new modality can be beneficial for different business models such as:

  • Electric Advertising Businesses: For businesses operating electric advertising with independent meters, the prepaid service offers significant advantages. It allows these businesses to allocate a fixed budget for their monthly energy consumption, ensuring their advertising campaigns run without unexpected costs. This predictability is crucial for financial planning and maintaining consistent operations.
  • Cryptocurrency Mining Farms: Cryptocurrency mining farms, known for their high energy consumption, stand to benefit greatly from the prepaid model. By prepaying for electricity, these operations can better manage their budgets and predict operational costs, mitigating the financial risks associated with fluctuating energy prices. This stability is essential for sustaining long-term mining activities.
  • Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs): SMEs with seasonal or variable energy needs can leverage the prepaid service to optimize their energy expenses. This flexibility allows them to align energy costs with business cycles, enhancing overall financial planning and sustainability. By prepaying for a specified amount of electricity, SMEs can avoid unexpected expenses and allocate resources more effectively.

For households aiming to manage their monthly budgets more efficiently, the prepaid service provides a clear view of energy consumption and costs. Families can adjust their usage based on financial plans, preventing bill shocks and promoting more sustainable energy use. This service is particularly beneficial for households with tight budgets or those looking to reduce energy waste.

ICE’s prepaid electricity service represents a significant advancement in customer-centric energy solutions. By offering a versatile and practical approach to energy management, this service not only benefits residential customers but also provides substantial advantages to various business models.

By allowing users to pay for their electricity in advance, ICE is mirroring the convenience and predictability often associated with prepaid mobile phone services or even with the electronic invoicing service provided for FACTURATica.

The prepaid model enhances operational efficiency, financial predictability, and sustainability, making it a valuable addition to Costa Rica’s energy landscape.
