By Limón, Costa Rica — LIMÓN, Costa Rica – A prodigious young musician from the Caribbean coast is on the cusp of a life-changing international opportunity, but a financial hurdle stands between him and the world stage. Brayan Weelkly Prendigan, a talented transverse flute student from the National System of Musical Education (SINEM) in Limón, has been selected to join the prestigious Chineke! Junior Orchestra in London.
The invitation came after a rigorous audition process, recognizing Prendigan’s exceptional skill and dedication. The Chineke! Junior Orchestra is a groundbreaking ensemble that provides invaluable opportunities for young Black, Asian, and ethnically diverse musicians. The residential program, scheduled to take place from August 24 to 29, 2026, in the United Kingdom, brings together some of the most promising young classical musicians to train and perform at an elite level.

However, securing his place in the orchestra requires covering significant travel expenses, primarily airfare to the United Kingdom. With the date fast approaching, Prendigan has launched a public appeal for economic support to ensure he can seize this rare opportunity. He is seeking donations and asking for the community to help spread the word across digital platforms to help him reach his goal.

Prendigan also emphasized the importance of this experience beyond his personal growth. He views it as a chance to proudly represent his home province of Limón, his Afro-Costa Rican identity, and the nation as a whole on an international platform. In his search for funding, the young flutist formally requested assistance from the Ministry of Culture and Youth. According to Prendigan, the Ministry responded that it does not currently have additional funds available for this type of international endeavor. However, the institution is reportedly analyzing the possibility of providing him with a high-quality transverse flute to use during the program, which would be a significant contribution to his performance needs.
Despite the setback, Prendigan remains hopeful, placing his faith in the power of art and the generosity of the community. His story highlights a common challenge faced by emerging artists in Costa Rica, where extraordinary talent often requires community backing to overcome financial barriers and access global opportunities.
