Spearheaded by the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), the project represents a monumental leap in patient care capabilities. The facility expanded from a cramped 56 square meters to an expansive 1,445 square meters. While the official ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on April 10, the center has been operational since March 14 and has already managed nearly 5,000 patient consultations, demonstrating the immense and immediate demand for accessible, high-quality local care.

The new facility has successfully begun to decompress the heavily burdened Maximiliano Peralta Jiménez Hospital, Cartago’s main referral center. Statistics show a significant drop in patients from other health areas seeking care at overwhelmed centers; in the first quarter of 2025, 4,789 such cases were recorded, a figure that plummeted to 2,768 during the same period this year.
The clinical efficiency of the new El Guarco center is particularly noteworthy. According to officials, an impressive 97% of all patients who seek treatment at the facility are managed and resolved on-site. Only a mere 3% require transfer to the hospital for more specialized care. The most common ailments treated include viral infections, respiratory conditions, and gastrointestinal issues, which are precisely the types of cases that can overwhelm hospital emergency rooms if not addressed at the primary care level.
By investing in robust local infrastructure, the CCSS is not only improving emergency response times but is fundamentally reshaping how healthcare is delivered in Cartago.
