The initiative has become a cornerstone of support for community-managed water systems in the nation’s Western region, directly benefiting over 41,500 residents who rely on these vital local services.
The program focuses on strengthening the country’s Administrative Associations of Communal Aqueduct and Sewer Systems, known as ASADAS. These community-led organizations are the backbone of water management in rural areas, ensuring that clean, potable water reaches households often located far from the centralized infrastructure of the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM).

The contrast with urban centers is stark. Within the GAM, an estimated 61% of water systems struggle to meet user demand, particularly during the dry season. This deficit impacts approximately 590,000 people, highlighting a critical vulnerability in the nation’s water infrastructure.
P&G’s “Cuidemos el Agua” program targets this gap by providing direct investment and hands-on support. Over the past three years, the initiative has partnered with more than ten ASADAS across the cantons of Sarchí, Grecia, Puriscal, Alajuela, Zarcero, and Palmares. The support is both financial, through improvements to facilities and infrastructure, and practical, through dedicated volunteer efforts.
A key component of the program’s success is the active involvement of P&G’s own workforce. More than 300 employees have volunteered their time to visit various ASADAS, tackling specific needs on the ground. Their work includes painting hydrants and storage tanks to prevent corrosion, refreshing signage for community awareness, and cleaning and organizing storage facilities, all of which contribute to the operational efficiency and longevity of these essential systems.
Company leadership emphasizes that the program is designed to honor and amplify the foundational work already being done by community members. By partnering with ASADAS, P&G aims to empower these local entities rather than replace their crucial function.
