The newly opened overpass is a significant piece of engineering, spanning approximately 385 meters. It features two lanes, one for each direction of travel, and includes integrated sidewalks to ensure pedestrian safety and connectivity. The comprehensive project required a substantial investment of ¢5.676 billion, a figure that reflects the complexity of the undertaking in a densely populated urban area.
In addition to the main bridge structure, the project’s scope included ancillary works crucial for community integration. This involved the demolition of an older, outdated pedestrian bridge and the construction of a modern replacement strategically located in front of the Hatillo sports plaza. This ensures that while vehicular traffic flows unimpeded above, local residents can continue to move safely between their neighborhoods on foot.
The completion of the Hatillo overpass is the final chapter in a long-term strategic plan to overhaul the Circunvalación. It follows other major upgrades, including the construction of underpasses and interchanges at key roundabouts like Zapote, Garantías Sociales, and La Bandera. Collectively, these projects represent a monumental effort by Costa Rican authorities to modernize infrastructure and directly address the economic and social costs of chronic traffic congestion in the capital.
