According to the latest demographic projections from Costa Rica’s National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), Sarapiquí is set to transform from a community of approximately 54,000 residents to a bustling hub of nearly 140,000 people over the next two and a half decades. This surge would elevate Sarapiquí to the ninth most populous canton in the entire country, placing immense strain on its current infrastructure, which officials say is already showing signs of stress.

The most immediate threat, according to the mayor, is a deepening water crisis. Several communities, including El Palmar, Río Frío, and various sectors along the border, are already grappling with significant water shortages. This scarcity is not only a public health concern but is also actively stifling economic development. Rodríguez noted that the lack of a reliable water supply is a major obstacle for new housing projects and a significant deterrent for private investment that could bring jobs and prosperity to the region.
Healthcare is another top-priority concern. For years, residents of Sarapiquí have had to endure long and often difficult journeys to Heredia or Guápiles to receive specialized medical attention. To address this, the municipality has already taken a significant step by acquiring a 30,000-square-meter plot of land in the La Flaminia district of Horquetas. The property was officially transferred to the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) this year, designated for the construction of a long-awaited regional hospital.
We must move forward with the construction of a hospital for Sarapiquí. Our citizens should not have to travel long distances for specialized care. We have done our part by providing the land; now we need a firm commitment from the CCSS and the government to make this vital project a reality.

The mayor has formally requested greater support from the Ministry of Public Security to bolster the cantonal police force and security infrastructure, ensuring that law and order can be maintained as the community grows.
