Over 500 cyclists from across the country converged in the heart of Guanacaste to test their mettle in a pure mountain biking competition that delivered dramatic finishes and celebrated a new milestone for women in the sport.
The event, sanctioned by the Costa Rican Cycling Federation, has rapidly become a cornerstone of the national MTB circuit. Its growing prestige was evident not only in the high caliber of competition but also in the sheer number of participants eager to take on one of two challenging routes. Organizers meticulously designed the courses to push athletes to their limits while showcasing the region’s demanding natural landscape.

Competitors in the main event faced a grueling 68-kilometer course featuring 1,336 meters of positive elevation gain, a true test of endurance and technical skill. A shorter, yet still demanding, 39-kilometer route with 789 meters of climbing was also offered, ensuring the event remained accessible to a broad spectrum of cyclists and fostering a spirit of community participation across different skill levels.
The elite men’s category produced the day’s most breathtaking spectacle. The race evolved into a fierce, head-to-head battle between Keiron Solís of the Pedregal–7C–Defender team and Paolo Montoya from Colono Bikestation kölbi. The two rivals traded blows throughout the course, with neither able to establish a decisive lead. The victory ultimately came down to a frantic final sprint, where Solís managed to power ahead, crossing the finish line in 2:11:44, a mere two seconds ahead of Montoya, who clocked in at 2:11:46. Luis López of Megamo Manza Té La Selva secured the final podium spot with a strong time of 2:12:23.
In the Open Women’s category, Gloriana Quesada from Colono Bikestation kölbi claimed the top honor, finishing with an impressive time of 2:44:11. In a remarkable display of tight competition, second-place finisher Cristel Espinoza was awarded the exact same time, highlighting the intense pace of the women’s race. Quesada’s teammate, Marisol García, rounded out the podium, securing third place for the dominant Colono Bikestation kölbi squad with a time of 2:45:44.
Beyond the elite results, the event marked a significant achievement for Costa Rican cycling by setting a new record for female participation. More than 100 women competed across the various categories, a testament to the series’ success in promoting inclusivity and strengthening the growth of women’s mountain biking in the country. This milestone was celebrated by organizers and participants alike as a positive indicator of the sport’s burgeoning popularity among female athletes.
The competition was fierce across all age groups and disciplines. Winners in the Master categories included Jonathan Carballo and María José Ávila (30-34), Óscar Morera and Eilyn Jiron (35-39), and Marcos Vinicio Mendonza and Cristine de Mezerville (45-49). The Sub-23 category was swept by Bobbys Cycling Team riders Daniel Azofeifa and Denise Rahilly. Victories were also earned in the Gravel, E-bike, and other Master divisions, showcasing the event’s diverse appeal.
With this successful Guanacaste stage concluded, all eyes now turn to the series’ next major challenge. The third event is scheduled for Saturday, August 22, and promises to be the most demanding yet. The Desafío MTB will be an epic 100-kilometer race with a staggering 3,100 meters of elevation gain, starting from Místico in Playa Hermosa, Jacó, and finishing at Hacienda El Rodeo. This formidable finale is expected to attract the nation’s top endurance riders and will serve as a fitting conclusion to a landmark season for the Serie CR MTB.
